life and work

Growing up in Judenburg and Vienna, where he graduated from the commercial academy with the Matura , Hufnagl joined the local editorial team of the Austrian daily Kurier in 1968 . From 1977 he wrote satirical and time-critical texts in the column Watschenmann (originally the title of a radio program on the station "Rot-Weiß-Rot" ).

1980–1988 he headed the newspaper's culture department. Hufnagl paid for his resolute commitment to the author Thomas Bernhard , who was hostile to many politicians and opinion leaders at the time, and his work by losing his leadership role. As compensation, so to speak, he was given the daily comment section headers , from which he made the best in a double sense, which is why it established his high reputation among friends of satire.

Hufnagl attached particular importance to the fact that the title head pieces does not mean what is commonly called dachtel , wading or slap in Austria , but rather pieces from the head, intellectual achievements. From 1988 to September 2005 his column headers was printed almost every day, and in total it appeared more than five thousand times.

Hufnagl dealt with bizarre and astonishing occurrences of everyday life and above all of the Austrian civil service, which in all cases can be traced back to real occurrences and can therefore be described as real satire. According to an interview with the radio station Ö1 , he wanted to make readers smile and shake their heads. His favorite word was “Stempelgebrechen”, Austrian official German for the lack of a stamp on an application or an entry. Many of his made-up words and abbreviations, such as "Aushecker", "Hättiwari" (= if I would, would be me), "ULP" (Our Dear Post) or " UHBP " (Our Mr. Federal President) are now part of everyday Austrian language.

A selection of his head pieces were summarized in four books and on an audio CD and performed by Hufnagl himself on stages (e.g. 2000/2001 under the title Land der Koffer ).

Herbert Hufnagl died on October 14, 2005 from organ failure as a result of a long-standing cancer. He was buried in the Dornbach cemetery .
