Together they wrote several comedies, among which The Rape of the Sabine Women from 1884 became a classic . The dramatic works of the brothers in themselves are regarded by theater studies as “ clothes ” in the succession of August von Kotzebue . The ability of both of them to work out the comic element from any everyday situation is emphasized. In this they are forerunners of modern tabloid comedy .

Their other joint work also includes a number of humoresques . A book edition of these pieces issued during his lifetime comprised seven volumes.

In 1885 Franz von Schönthan played the main role of the smear theater director Striese in The Robbery of the Sabine Women . The brothers had designed the role according to their own example.
