Walter Bauer (born November 4, 1904 in Merseburg , † December 23, 1976 in Toronto ) was a German writer .

Life

Walter Bauer was the son of a carter . After attending an elementary school , he completed teacher training at a teacher training college in Merseburg from 1919 to 1925 . He then went on a hike with a friend in 1925, which took him through Germany , Austria , Italy and Switzerland . From 1926 to 1928 Bauer did odd jobs and studied German language and literature for a few semesters at the University of Halle . From 1928 to 1930 he worked as a private tutor in Leuna and as a teacher in Stangerode ( Harz ). After his marriage in 1930 he moved to Halle (Saale) . From the end of the 1920s, Bauer's first literary works appeared, which already identified him as a critical humanist without party affiliation.

After the transfer of power to the National Socialists in 1933, Bauer was temporarily banned from writing . His books, published before 1933, were considered undesirable and were no longer printed; however, it was possible for Bauer to publish new works throughout the Third Reich . After the beginning of the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and used as a soldier in France , the Soviet Union , Greece and Italy . In Italy he was taken prisoner of war , from which he was released to Munich in 1946 . He lived as a freelance writer in Wolfratshausen near Munich until 1948 and received special support from the editor Max Tau , who emigrated to Norway before the outbreak of war , and who described Bauer as one of his most important discoveries in an interview in 1965. In 1949 he married for the second time and moved to Stuttgart . Bauer's marriage ended in divorce in 1952. As a result he decided to leave Germany in view of his deep disappointment with the social development of the young Federal Republic. In September 1952 he emigrated to Canada .

In Canada, Bauer worked from 1952 to 1954, including as a factory worker and dishwasher. In 1954 he began to study linguistics and literature at the University of Toronto , which he completed with a bachelor's degree and, after completing a post-graduate degree, in 1959 with a master's degree. In Canada, Bauer continued to write in German; his works appeared in West German publishers . From 1959 to 1976 the author was lecturer for German language and literature at the University of Toronto , from 1967 as associate professor .

Walter Bauer's extensive work includes novels , stories , biographies , children's books , essays , poetry and radio plays .

Walter Bauer was a corresponding member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt . In 1956 he was the first recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Book Prize, for Die Lange Reisen , a biography of Fridtjof Nansen . The now rather unknown prize was donated by the publisher Helmut Kindler , other winners are known Philip Noel-Baker , 1961, Roger Ikor , 1957, Kurt R. Grossmann , who rejected the prize because the right-wing German national Otto Dibelius was a member of the jury, Wolfgang Weyrauch and Heinrich Satter for his book Model Charity .
