Ugo Betti

Ugo Betti (born February 4, 1892 in Camerino , † June 9, 1953 in Rome ) was an Italian playwright .

life and work

Ugo Betti was studying law in Parma when the First World War began and he volunteered as a soldier. After the war he finished his studies and made a career as a judge. He was only active as a writer in his spare time. In 1922 he published a first volume of poems. His first play La Padrona was premiered in 1927 and, encouraged by the success of the first play, he began to concentrate entirely on working on dramas.

In 1931 he went from Parma to Rome. After the Second World War he worked in the library of the Ministry of Justice. Betti wrote a total of 25 plays, many of which have won awards in Italy. After the death of Luigi Pirandello , he was considered the most important contemporary playwright in Italy. His pieces are often set in the judicial environment , and that is also the name of his most famous piece: Corruption in the Palace of Justice .
