Cläre Schimmel also Claire Schimmel , real name Klara Helene Emilie Schimmel (born January 23, 1902 in Stuttgart ; † March 6, 1986 there ) was a German radio play director .
Life
Claire Schimmel was born in Stuttgart as the daughter of the accountant and leading Württemberg social democrat Kurt Schimmel . Trained as an opera singer and actress at the University of Music there, she soon made a career in these fields all over Europe (including in 1934 with arias from Wagner operas performed live on Radio Luxembourg ), and from 1936 also as a broadcaster . In Berlin in the 1940s, Cläre Schimmel experienced the beginnings of television and took on his first directorial roles. From 1945 to 1967 she was head of the radio play department of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) , which she and the chief dramaturge Gerhard Pragerand where she directed almost 300 radio plays. In addition to those responsible for the Northwest German Broadcasting Corporation (NWDR) , it was Prager and Schimmel who dominated the early radio play and strengthened its development “into a literary, almost pure play on words”. 1953 their production was the play The Other and I of Günter Eich (SDR 1952 ) with the prestigious Hörspielpreis the Kriegsblinden excellent. Today, along with Fritz Schröder-Jahn , Walter Ohm and Gert Westphal, she is one of the “great directors” of the so-called “heyday of radio plays” in the 1950s.
Schimmel was involved in the reconstruction of the Stuttgarter Rundfunk from the very beginning and is said to have played a not insignificant role in the appointment of Erich Roßmann , a party friend of her father and Nazi persecute (whom she called Uncle ), as director of Radio Stuttgart in 1948 .
Clare Schimmel remained unmarried. She died on March 6, 1986 in her house in the Sonnenberg district of Stuttgart. The burial took place in the family grave in the forest cemetery Stuttgart in the district of Degerloch . The grave has not existed since 2001.
