Not Afraid of Big Animals is a German feature film by Ulrich Erfurth from 1953 based on a story by Karl Noti . It is a remake of the French film Le Dompteur (1938).

action

The technical draftsman Emil Keller is actually an inconspicuous fellow citizen who has a penchant for submission. Despite his existing qualities, he moves in the shadow of dominant people. On the one hand, there is his superior, Mr Bollmann, and on the other hand, the brother of the landlady of his furnished room, a former prize boxer. This Mr. Schimmel found out by secretly opening a letter from a lawyer to Emil that he was waiting for an inheritance. In order to get a part of it, he is now trying to couple his niece Emma with Emil so that Emil will marry her. But Emil loves Anni, his boss's secretary, who in turn also has an eye on her.

It turns out, however, that the legacy consists of three adult lions, who move Emil Keller to flee when they first meet. After Schimmel wants to celebrate Emils Emma's impending wedding with his equally impressive four brothers, he turns a good face into a bad game. When Anni wants to pick him up for the dinner that was agreed at the same time and learns of the alleged marriage, she turns around and now wants to respond to Bollmann's previously rejected advances. Emil loses his courage to face life and goes to the circus ring. There he puts a rope dangling from the ceiling around his neck, but thereby opens a gate to the lions moving into the ring. Emil no longer shows fear and the animals obey his will. Keller is very astonished about this, happily moved and draws new courage. Now he is no longer afraid of two-legged animals and first gains respect from Schimmel, then from Bollmann, whom he surprises over dinner with Anni. Anni, delighted with Emil's male strength, is his again.

The first performance in the GDR took place on November 29, 1954 in the film theater "Jugend" in Berlin's Langhansstrasse. On January 5, 1964, the film was broadcast for the first time in the GDR's DFF and over 10 years later, on September 15, 1974, it was shown on ARD .

criticism

The lexicon of international films describes the film as “a sometimes enjoyable grotesque comedy in which a 'little man' learns to overcome his fear.” Die Neue Zeit believes that the amiable and well-intentioned film can be enjoyed with pleasure , although it comes from the jumbo box of West German film production. The evangelical film observer comes to the conclusion that the strip is a nice film drama that can be watched safely from 14 years of age.
