Joseph Offenbach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Offenbach (born December 28, 1904 in Offenbach am Main , † October 15, 1971 in Darmstadt ; actually Joseph Ziegler ) was a German actor and radio play speaker . He owed his stage name to an engagement in 1931 at the Nationaltheater Mannheim ; the director did not want to tolerate a fourth Ziegler in the ensemble , since three actors had already borne this name.

biography

As a trained saddler , Offenbach (then still Ziegler) was initially an amateur actor and received his first stage engagement in Zwickau in 1927 ; then he played in Heidelberg , Mannheim and at the Munich State Theater . During the Second World War, he had supporting roles in some rather trivial films.

After the war he was first on the road with a touring stage , which Fritz Rémond also belonged to. From 1946 he worked at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg (long under Gustaf Gründgens ). In the 1950s he gained greater fame as a film actor , including in Des Teufels General (1955) and Der Hauptmann von Köpenick (1956). In the 1960s he became one of the most popular television actors in Germany as Father Scholz in the television series The Despicable One (with Inge Meysel , 1965–1971) and as artist agent Jacobsen in Salto Mortale (with Gustav Knuth , 1969–1972).

Offenbach was also active as a radio play director. In 1964 he produced the radio play Der Schut based on the novel of the same name by Karl May , in which he himself played the role of Hajji Halef Omar , alongside the young Charles Brauer in the role of Kara Ben Nemsi . As early as 1962 he had spoken the role of the pirate Long John Silver in the radio play Treasure Island . In addition, he was still on stage, including at the Städtische Bühnen in Frankfurt am Main . One of his star roles was Datterich in the dialect of the same name by Ernst Elias Niebergall , with which he first appeared in the Frankfurt theater . This production was recorded by Hessischer Rundfunk in 1963 .

Joseph Offenbach made his last live appearance on German television just 13 days before his death on October 2, 1971 in Bremen. At that time he appeared in the role of a shepherd with the song I'm not going back to Gelsenkirchen in the 21st episode of the Rudi Carrell Show broadcast by ARD .

Joseph Offenbach died on October 15, 1971 at the age of 66 as a result of a heart attack and was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt's Bessungen district (grave site: IH 58).

As a voice actor, he lent his voice to Kenneth Connor ( Carry on Sergeant ), Cyril Cusack ( A Bride in Every Street ), David Kossoff (Svengali ) and HB Warner ( Isn't life beautiful? ).
