Ulrich Erfurth

Ulrich Wilhelm Erfurth (born March 22, 1910 in Elberfeld , North Rhine-Westphalia , † September 19, 1986 in Hamburg ) was a German theater director , theater director and film director .

Life

Erfurth studied German and art history at the universities of Cologne and Berlin . In autumn 1931 he began his theater career as an assistant dramaturge at the Wuppertal theaters . In 1932 he offered his first directorial work here.

In 1934/35 he acted as senior director in Koblenz , in 1935 he came to the State Theater in Berlin , where Gustaf Gründgens had initially offered him a job as assistant director. Erfurth staged Madame sans Genê (based on Victorien Sardou ), Der Ritter vom Mirakel (based on Lope de Vega ) and Karl III. and Anna von Österreich (after Manfried Rössner). At the same time he worked as an employee of Gustaf Gründgens and as an assistant director for various films such as Friedemann Bach (1940/41). In 1944 he directed his first film, the comedy " Erzieherin wanted" .

After the war ended, Erfurth made his way as a farm worker in Upper Bavaria in 1945/46. From 1946 to 1949 he worked as a director at the Hamburger Kammerspiele . In 1949 he came to the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf as senior theater director and became theater director there in 1951. In Düsseldorf he directed Hamlet (1949), Wallenstein (1953) and Six People Looking for an Author (1953).

In 1955 he followed a call to the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, where he was also Gründgens' deputy. Here he brought back Wallenstein (1955), Rose Bernd (1956), The Visit of the Old Lady (1956, with Elisabeth Flickenschildt ) and Die Physiker (1962/63, also with Flickenschildt) and Der Hofmeister (1960, with Heinz Reincke ) Performance.

In 1964 he took over the management of the Drama Institute at the Folkwang School in Essen . From 1965 to 1968 Erfurth was Vice Director at the Burgtheater in Vienna , 1968 to 1972 General Director of the Frankfurt City Theaters . From 1965 to 1975 he directed the Bad Hersfeld Festival . There he staged King Lear and Napoleon or The Hundred Days . He later worked as a guest director on various stages. As a stage director, Erfurth attached great importance to faithfulness to the works and decidedly rejected experiments.

He also directed several feature films. His comedies and homeland films were usually quite conventional . Only Frucht ohne Liebe , which dealt with the subject of infertility, fell out of the ordinary and caused a scandal when it was first performed in 1956.
