Victorien Sardou
Victorien Sardou (born September 5, 1831 in Paris , † November 8, 1908 ) was a French playwright .
Life
Sardou wrote numerous historical dramas, comedies and librettos for operas and operettas for various Parisian theaters . He worked for Camille Saint-Saëns and Jacques Offenbach , among others . He was often accused of plagiarism .
In 1877 he was appointed to the Académie française .
From today's perspective of the greatest importance is his drama La Tosca from 1887, which became known in particular through Sarah Bernhardt's interpretation of the title role . As early as 1889, the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini had the idea of turning Sardou's drama into an opera. But it was not until 1898 that Puccini and Sardou met in Paris. Together with the librettists Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica , Puccini created the opera Tosca , which premiered on January 14, 1900 in Rome .
