action

During the Second World War, the Belgian industrialist René Dobersin was drafted and fought on the eastern front on the side of the Germans. There he was taken prisoner of war, which he spent in Siberia under extreme conditions. Ten years after the end of the war, like the last Germans, he was released to his home country as a result of Konrad Adenauer 's trip to the USSR . When he arrives there, he is emaciated from hard forced labor, alienated with the present and no longer recognized by anyone, confronted with new realities. Dobersin has to find out that his wife Claire believed he had fallen in the east and then declared him dead. But it gets worse: Claire Dobersin then remarried and has been called Claire Vernon since she married her second husband Albert. René Dobersin is looking for work in his company and has not been recognized again since he went to war because of his strong visual changes.

One day he reveals the whole truth to his (ex) wife. Claire is shocked and doesn't know how to react to the completely changed situation. Her husband Albert, who skilfully continued to run the company, is not prepared to tolerate the returnees as a rival around them. Because René demands nothing less than the return of his wife and his own company. On the eponymous night of the decision, the viewer learns that both men have stains on their vest: René was not a good husband, and Albert initially entered Dobersin's company with the intention of doing espionage services for the competition. After much deliberation, Claire Dobersin decides to stay with her current husband and let the past be the past. René accepts this decision with a heavy heart, but now he also knows that he has to redesign his future. He gets on a plane and flies into a new life.
