On the trail of the perpetrator is a German crime series by Studio Hamburg on behalf of the NDR , which was produced between 1967 and 1973. All episodes were directed by Jürgen Roland . The series is based on the French series The Five Last Minutes ( Les cinq dernières minutes ). Episodes 1 to 6 were shot in black and white, the other twelve in color.

concept

In this crime series, set in Paris and the surrounding area and designed by French authors in most of the episodes, the audience (based on the model of the short TV series Inspector Hornleigh intervenes ... from 1961) should be involved in the search for the perpetrator. Before the film began, director Jürgen Roland asked the audience to solve the case on the basis of evidence .

Now the Whodunit began to discover a murder. Then the brash and grumpy inspector Bernard and his assistant, Inspector Mireux (episode 1–2) and the somewhat stupid Inspector Janot (from episode 3) determined. Sometimes Bernard put forward several theses for the audience. At the end of the day Bernard turned to the camera and said: “For me the case is clear. And for you?"

Now Jürgen Roland appeared again, who received several prominent guests in front of a large audience and asked them for their opinion. The guests included Uschi Glas , Helga Feddersen , Inge Meysel , Liselotte Pulver , Katja Ebstein , Reinhard Mey and Hans-Dietrich Genscher , who gave their tips and gave reasons.

Finally it went back to the plot in which Commissioner Bernard now provided the solution. A few quickly thrown down words, apparently unimportant remarks, supposedly insignificant observations, which in their combination led to the conviction of the murderer, were of decisive importance.

Finally, Jürgen Roland and his guests analyzed the result. There was no price for the right solution.

Although the perpetrator was on the trail of France, the series was exclusively made up of German actors. Jürgen Roland engaged several prominent actors of the television era at the time: Wolfgang Kieling, Ruth Maria Kubitschek and Horst Frank appeared in two episodes, Klaus Löwitsch was seen three times, Margot Trooger even five times.
