Siegfried Franz (born August 14, 1913 in Mannheim ; † March 18, 1998 in Hamburg ) was a German film and radio play composer.

Life

Siegfried Franz, son of a board member, received piano lessons as a child. After graduating from high school, he attended the master class for piano with Max von Pauer , composition with Wilhelm Petersen and conducting with Chlodwig Rasberger at the City University of Music and Theater in Mannheim .

In 1938 Franz achieved “artistic maturity with distinction” in both subjects and was accepted into the university's teaching staff a little later. He worked there for three years as a lecturer in music theory and piano. During this time his first own compositions were performed.

After the outbreak of war , Franz was hired by the Wehrmacht High Command to organize evening hours. From 1941 he trained singers in the army and air force. After he finally had to serve as a normal soldier, Franz fell into American captivity, where he was able to set up a camp band.

After his release, Franz became the second pianist under the composer and conductor Hans-Martin Majewski at the Altonaer Theater in Hamburg . There he met the cabaret artist Ossi Wagner , who brought him to the NWDR as a freelance composer .

Here Franz, who had long since settled in Hamburg, advanced to become one of the most prominent and busiest composers for radio plays . In addition to stage music and operas for radio, numerous pieces of music for television followed from the 1950s, and finally from 1954 a total of 22 film music . At the end of the 1970s he withdrew into private life.

Siegfried Franz, who married his former fellow student Dorothea Reimann in 1943, died almost five months after the death of his wife on March 18, 1998 in Hamburg. Today their son Udo works as a cameraman.
