As a result of an accident while climbing the Kampenwand (fall from a height of 40 meters), he was completely exempted from military service.

From 1941 Demmel had rented a studio in the attic of a farmhouse in Breitbrunn , where he met the painter Lilo Ramdohr while studying landscape at Chiemsee . He also founded a private painting school in Breitbrunn. In 1942 Demmel was awarded the Nuremberg Albrecht Dürer Prize , the Lenbach Prize and the Wilhelm Leibl Prize. In 1944, the Haidhauser parental home was lost in a bomb attack.

In the post-war period Demmel earned his living partly with portraits of the wives of the American officers stationed in Upper Bavaria . In the summer of 1946 he moved to Chiemgau . Demmel stayed there with his mother, a portrait photographer. From 1946/47 he participated in the Rosenheimer Kunstverein and remained a member of the jury for 20 years. Also in the revitalization of the “ Munich artist cooperative kgl. Priv. V. 1868 “(Board member Constantin Gerhardinger ) he had a share and remained a member of the jury and the board for 35 years. Demmel was involved in the exhibitions of the artists' association from the 50s to the 70s, a. a. often in the Munich House of Art .

From May 1951 he was able to acquire a property on a hill ( Aischinger Höhe ) above Gstadt, which was very popular in the Chiemgau art scene , where he lived and had his studio and also ran a wine tavern called Palette . He took part in the first post-war exhibition of the traditional Frauenwörther artists' guild . Numerous exhibitions in Hamburg , Düsseldorf and Munich followed. Demmel also made commissioned portraits of regional politicians, professors, local celebrities and mayors. He briefly had a marriage from which his daughter Dagi arose, was a passionate sailor on the Chiemsee and owned a domicile in La Palma , where he liked to spend his winters. Numerous drawings and paintings were also created in Ibiza , Paris and Cameroon . In general, Demmel always maintained contact with a great number of contemporary artists, such as Kurt Arentz , Ursula Tzschichholz and Albert Stagura ( only the painter Willibald Demmel enjoyed the privilege of being able to paint next to him outdoors ) and many others.

Acquaintance with members of the White Rose

From autumn 1941 to summer 1942 Demmel was often visited by Lilo Ramdohr and her friend from the Munich painting school of Hein König Die Form , namely Alexander Schmorell . Through Demmel's mediation in Breitbrunn, Lilo Ramdohr had rented a chamber for painting excursions in the homestead of the Bumberer family, friends of whom Demmel had also portrayed, in which she and Schmorell stored supplies, clothing, drawings and inventory for times of need from 1942. Demmel was privy to the participation of his friends in the actions of the White Rose .

In 1948 he took Lilo Ramdohr and her 4-year-old daughter Doma-Ulrike into his home after they had escaped from the Soviet occupation zone , and for the next few years worked for them to find a job at Chiemgau boarding schools ( Schloss Neubeuen and Landschulheim Schloss Ising ). In 1987 he sent a catalog to Lilo Fürst-Ramdohr for the anniversary exhibition 1984 in Seeon-Seebruck on the occasion of his 70th birthday with a dedication emphasizing the long friendship from 1941 to 1987.

Demmel's painting style

Demmel is best known for his popular but realistic portrayals of people and the numerous naturalistic Chiemgau landscapes , which he made as oil paintings, often using spatula technique , and as watercolors . In addition, he produced many nude drawings and portraits using the charcoal and red chalk technique .

“Demmel's works are painted in a broad, pastose line, swelling and juicy. Its colors are bright and powerful, but do not lack rich nuances. The temperament often tempts him to put on lively lights that give the paintings effects that one would like to see muted from time to time. Willibald Demmel's struggle for expression knows no tense experimentation. He is an eye person who sticks to reality. ” (Deutsche Zukunft, Düsseldorf, 1952).

"Above all, Willibald Demmel's craftsmanship is impressive, it is striking how confidently he builds his pictures, how he knows how to set heavy and light things, knows how to give light and shadow." (Oberbayerisches Volksblatt, July 1954)

"Demmel's pictures are bursting with health, just like the artist himself, and leave a deep impression." (Josef Miehle, Rosenheim 1970)
