The first disenchantment in the West soon occurs when Christiane cannot reach her rich sister by phone despite an appointment. In her financial need, Karl accommodates her in a meager attic room above the pub, where he changes his work clothes as a waiter. Christine quickly finds work as an accountant in the city. They approach, fall in love and soon get married.

Karl dreams of buying the corner bar he works in with his savings. When an operator of a chain of chicken roasters makes the bar owner an offer to buy, Karl sees his hour struck and makes the bar owner an offer to buy. Disillusioned, he realizes that his savings are nowhere near enough to counter the offer made by the newly rich owner of chicken roasters. To Christine, the idea of Karl as a bar owner does not seem appealing, a dispute that questions the relationship breaks out, but reconciliation takes place again. Desperate about Karl's disappointment that his plan will fail because of the lack of money, she withholds money at her place of work in order to enable Karl to buy the corner pub at the last moment. background

Two in a million was built on site in the streets of Berlin (West) just before the wall was built and gives an authentic look at the everyday reality of ordinary people. The film had its world premiere on October 12, 1961 in Hanover .

The original director Victor Vicas fell ill at the beginning of the shooting. Then his assistant director Wieland Liebske , who is responsible for a large part of the film, had to step in. Liebskes should only be mentioned as a (co-) director for a feature film.

Walter Lembke provided the novel of the same name.

Albrecht Hennings designed the film structures, Klaus König served Heinz Hölscher as camera assistant.

Henriette Gonnermann made her film debut here, and for Maly Delschaft , Two in a Million was the last work.

Reviews

Bucher's Encyclopedia of Film praised Zwei unter Million for its “unusually sober depiction of the economic realities of the present day and the problems of two people who are insignificant in every traditional respect. Liebske, a former assistant to Alfred Weidenmann [...] showed himself to be clearly influenced by the works of the Nouvelle Vague , particularly in his playful (sometimes playful) handling of the recording technology and the reserved characterization of his protagonists. "

The Lexicon of International Films wrote "The unmistakable Berlin tone is most successfully achieved in instantaneous scenes and in the many marginal characters" and called Two in Millions a "quasi-documentary film."

The film's large personal lexicon called the film a "social-realistic, anti-escapist Berlin everyday story"

Awards
