Vega medal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vega Medal ( Swedish Vegamedaljen ) is an award given by the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography since 1881 . It is named after the ship with which Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld first sailed the Northeast Passage in 1880 . The award will take place on the anniversary of Nordenskiöld's return to Stockholm , April 24th , by the King of Sweden .

For a long time, the medal was awarded every three years for achievements in the field of physical geography and was considered one of the most important awards in this field. In the intervening years, however, the Anders-Retzius Medal was awarded to a representative of human geography or anthropology , so that these three subject areas were represented alternately. After the Anders Retzius Medal was discontinued in 2015, the Vega Medal will also be awarded to human geographers, while the alternating subject area has been retained, while the SSAG medal has been awarded to anthropologists every three years since 2016 .
