Vagn Walfrid Ekman
Vagn Walfrid Ekman (born May 3, 1874 in Stockholm , † March 9, 1954 in Gostad near Stockaryd ) was a Swedish physicist and oceanographer.
Life
Walfrid was the fourth son of the chemist and hydrographer Fredrik Laurentz Ekman (1830-1890). He first studied physics at Uppsala University and attended lectures on oceanography . However, he was influenced by the lectures by Vilhelm Bjerknes , who taught fluid mechanics . During his expedition with the Fram , Fridtjof Nansen discovered that icebergs do not drift in the direction of the wind, but deviate at an angle of 20–40 °. At the suggestion of Bjerknes, Ekman - while still a student - came up with an explanation of this phenomenon with the Ekman spiral . After he had completed his studies in 1902 with a doctorate degree, Ekman went to the International Laboratory for Oceanographic Research in Oslo , where he worked for seven years. From 1910 to 1939 he continued his theoretical and practical work at Lund University as a professor of mechanics and mathematical physics. His investigations into the interaction of wind power, Coriolis force and friction led to extensive knowledge about the formation and behavior of ocean currents. He also worked theoretically and experimentally with dead water , a phenomenon caused by internal waves at river mouths . 1925
In 1910 he was appointed to the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund , in 1931 in the Royal Science and Literature Society in Gothenburg and in 1935 in both the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .
In addition to the Ekman spiral, the Ekman number , the Ekman layer and the Ekman transport were named after Ekman . He was awarded the Agassiz medal in 1928 and the Vega medal in 1939 .
