David R. Montgomery (2011).

David R. Montgomery (born September 7, 1961 ) is Professor in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle (USA). He heads the research group geomorphology and also works on Quaternary Research Center on the geology of the Quaternary .

Montgomery earned a bachelor's degree in geology from Stanford University in 1984 and a PhD in geomorphology from the University of California, Berkeley , in 1991 . He researches the development of topography and the influence of geomorphological processes on ecosystems and human societies . His publications include studies on the role of topsoil in the history of civilization , on the evolution and local extinction of salmon , on morphological processes in mountain river areas , on the formation of mountain ranges and on applications of digital topography. He conducted field studies in eastern Tibet and the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

In 2008 Montgomery received a MacArthur Fellowship . In the same year, he received the Washington State Book Award in the non-fiction category for his book Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations (Eng: Dirt. Why our civilization is losing the ground under our feet ). In 2020 he was honored with the Vega Medal of the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography .
