Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography ( Swedish Svenska Sällskapet för Antropologi och Geografi , SSAG for short) is a scientific society for the promotion of anthropology and geography that has existed in its current form since 1878 . In 2004 it had around 800 members.

history

In 1873 Gustaf Retzius , Hjalmar Stolpe (1841–1905), Hans Hildebrand and Oscar Montelius founded the Antropologiska sällskapet (anthropological society). Since there was no Society for Geography in Sweden and there was also an interest in this subject among the members, the Society decided at the end of 1877 to change the name to Svenska Sällskapet för Antropologi och Geografi , which came into effect the following year.

Publications

The society has been publishing the Ymer magazine since 1881 , and since 1966 in the form of a yearbook. The most important geographic journal in Sweden today is Geografiska annaler , which first appeared in 1919 and has been published in separate editions for physical geography (Series A) and human geography (Series B) since 1965 . Since 2018 the company has also published the journal Kritisk Etnografi .

Awards

Nordenskiöld returned to Stockholm on April 24, 1880

In memory of the return of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld to Stockholm on April 24, 1880, after he first sailed the Northeast Passage with the “ Vega ” , the company awards the Vega Medal, one of the world's most prestigious awards for physiogeographers. Nordenskiöld himself was the first to receive the medal, which was initially awarded primarily to explorers and explorers.

At times it was awarded every three years, while in the intervening years the Anders-Retzius Medal was awarded to a human geographer or an anthropologist, so that the three specialist areas of the society were represented alternately. In 2015, however, the society decided to no longer award the Anders Retzius Medal due to Retzius ' role as a racial researcher . Instead, she awarded the SSAG medal to the anthropologist Didier Fassin for the first time in 2016 and to Emily Martin in 2019 . In the meantime, the Vega Medal is also awarded to human geographers, the annually alternating award rhythm according to subject area remains. Other awards given by SSAG are the Johan August Wahlberg Medal and the Hedin Medal . The medals are presented by the King of Sweden .
