Filip Hjulström

Henning Filip Hjulström (born October 6, 1902 in Lungsund , † March 26, 1982 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish geographer and geomorphologist .

Life

Filip Hjulström studied in Karlstad and at the Uppsala University natural sciences and was in Uppsala with his 1935 dissertation Studies of the morphological activity of rivers as illustrated by the River Fyris doctorate . This work is one of the classic works of geomorphology and is considered a milestone in the study of flowing waters.

From these investigations carried out by Filip Hjulström, the Hjulström diagram emerged, in which the empirically established legal relationship between transport and sedimentation of the river cargo is shown in its dependence on flow velocity and grain size.

In 1944 he became a professor at Uppsala University and from this time on he focused on physical geography , whereby, according to his ideas, experimental research had to be carried out from fixed stations over long periods of time, measuring and experimenting in the field.

Filip Hjulström was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in the geography section in 1961 and in 1963 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1970 he was awarded the Vega Medal by the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography . He was a knight of the French Legion of Honor .

His son Lennart Hjulström is a Swedish director and actor.
