The hitchhiker
A hitchhiker walks along a Swiss pass road in the glowing midday sun. In the heat he becomes delusional and dreams that a car that he tried to stop has run over him. When a car finally stops and the driver asks if he should take it with him, the hitchhiker defiantly runs away.
Oranges in front of her window
During the Second World War, a deserted Wehrmacht soldier hides in a French village. A resident signals to him with oranges in the window that there is no danger in sight. If there is danger, she takes it away. When the village was taken by French soldiers and the Americans, the resident disappeared and the deserter was lynched.
The promised village
The story consists of two plot lines: One takes place at the time of the Battle of Austerlitz, in which a fleeing hussar crosses the frozen Lake Constance and seeks shelter with farmers to get to Barangain, which no longer exists. The other storyline takes place in France during the German occupation. The Jew Wyler tries to flee Paris with his daughter and to reach the Swiss border, but is caught by the police.
In the woods of the heart
Baldach is a trained architect and passionate photographer. His dream was to leave something behind in the world. When he freed Franz Strau from a frozen pond, he received a lifesaver medal. Baldach's funeral is very simple, but when Baldach has to put the lifesaver medal on the coffin, a dispute breaks out. It turns out that he provoked him himself.
The survivor
An old man, de Raffenried, is sitting in the bathtub and asks a woman, Agnes, to read to him in the bathroom. He remembers a shipwreck that he witnessed as a captain.
The dynamitero
The story is about Guyan, a bomber in the Spanish Civil War. He now lives as a poacher and rabbit breeder in Switzerland. When a student gets tangled in an explosive bomb while on a hike, the teacher asks him for help.
The wasps
In a literary competition, a participant writes a compelling story about a group of hikers, one of whom dies after a wasp attack. The audience is thrilled.
Hitler's daughter
The story takes place in a Chinese laundry in New York. Federspiel's fictional half-friend Paratuga introduces Emily, a stationery saleswoman, as 'Hitler's daughter'. When Federspiel interviews Emily, she explains that the meeting of her future parents was indirectly due to Hitler.
Paratuga GmbH
In a dramatic text, the fictional character Paratuga talks to a Mr. Heim about topics from the tabloid press. A son Heim dies shortly afterwards. Paratuga, Guyan and Anna, a relative of the dead man, meet in a hotel room. “ Paratuga : The people want football, crossword puzzles or war. Therefore any policy is right. Anna : Why is the death of my brother-in-law so indifferent to me? Paratuga : Miserable driver. "
