action

The failed student Bernd Ziegenhals tries in vain to find a publisher for his novel. By chance he discovers that the doctoral thesis of the renowned sociology professor Kolczyk is a plagiarism , a translation of the work of a US author, and decides to blackmail Kolczyk. He initially accepts Ziegenhals' financial demands, but combines his signature on a first check for 10,000 DM with an undisguised declaration of war to the young man that one of them will fall by the wayside.

Since Kolczyk cannot bear to know that his reputation and entire existence are dependent on the benevolence of a blackmailer, he secretly begins to investigate Ziegenhals. He poses as his uncle to his roommates and finds his new address, including the acquaintance of Miezi, a roommate and friend of Ziegenhals. He makes an appointment with her later in the evening to talk to her in more detail, but Miezi does not show up at the agreed meeting point. Hours before, she had an unpleasant encounter with Kalle Prötzel, her former pimp, who was now released from prison, just as Miezi had made the decision to start a new life. When the prostitute is found dead the next morning and all of her savings have disappeared, both the goat neck, who suddenly got money, and Kolczyk, who had an appointment with Miezi at the time of the crime, find it difficult to explain. Ziegenhals convinces his former professor to pass him off as a personal secretary to the police, whom he helped out with a loan. Kolczyk explains his appointment with Miezi with a scientific study on the subject of prostitution, which Commissioner Rannow notes with a certain skepticism.

When one of the monthly donations is missing and Ziegenhals confronts the professor, Kolczyk, who has returned from a trip to the USA, presents an affidavit from the US author that the original scientific work was done by Kolczyk himself. However, he declares himself ready to refrain from filing a complaint against Ziegenhals in order to avoid unnecessary attention. Goat Neck is upset. However, when he finds out that it is just a bluff and the author of the work has already passed away, he increases his financial demands on the professor. But its resistance is unscrupulous. One mind game intervenes in the next. When Ziegenhals finally begins a relationship with Kolczyk's daughter Ginny, a life-and-death argument begins between the opponents, until one of them has nothing left to lose.

When casting, he relied on a relatively solid base of employees, including actor Jürgen Prochnow , who, like Petersen, later continued his career in the USA. The second leading role was played by Klaus Schwarzkopf , with whom Petersen had previously worked on various Tatort episodes. For the music of the distinguished composer Klaus Doldinger responsible. Reviews

The lexicon of the international film is: "A technically experienced, psychologically credible thriller, which deliberately wants to differentiate itself in the choice of material and dramaturgy from the theses-laden auteur cinema of the 70s."

Director Petersen follows “with concentrated attention” “the gradual escalation of this duel, which uses all possible means of physical and psychological humiliation to bring about a cynical and lethal final point. In short scenes, the dramaturgical possibilities of which are never overused, he confronts the habitus, environment and actions of the two opponents. " Petersen's film is " just as unconventional and unobtrusively critical of the prevailing social conditions as the novel on which it is based, " writes Hans-Christoph Blumenberg in the time , its tension stems less from the usual patterns of the genre, but develops primarily “from the precise plastic description of everyday habits and circumstances.” The reviewer calls the film a “stroke of luck” because of its “functional economic [n ] Staging that adapts its means to the requirements of the story without dangling ” and the “ incidental security in dealing with actors, which inspires even such worn-out characters as Berta Drews, Fritz Tillmann and Walter Gross to perform extremely haunted . ” All of this is so rare to find in German films that Petersen's cinema debut ü deserves attention and respect, said Blumenberg.
