Horst Bosetzky (2011)

Horst Otto Oskar Bosetzky (as a pseudonym also -ky ; born February 1, 1938 in Berlin ; † September 16, 2018 there ) was a German sociologist and writer . He became known to a wider public primarily through his crime novels .

Education, career as a sociologist

Between 1946 and 1951, Bosetzky attended the elementary school in Berlin-Neukölln that is now known as the Rütli School . After completing his industrial clerk apprenticeship at Siemens , he studied economics and business administration , sociology and psychology at the Free University of Berlin between 1963 and 1968 . To finance his studies, he wrote some crime stories for magazine series . In 1964 he joined the SPD . In 1969 he received his doctorate in sociology (subject: Basics of a sociology of industrial administration - possibilities and limits of viewing large industrial companies as a bureaucratic organization ), was Renate Mayntz's assistant and did research on the sociology of administration and organization .

From 1973 to 2000, Bosetzky was Professor of Sociology at the University of Applied Sciences for Administration and Justice of the City of Berlin. In organizational theory, he is one of the main representatives of the micropolitics approach . This approach particularly emphasizes the role of power in the organization. He shaped organizational research in particular by summarizing micro-political processes in the organization in concise terms such as the comradely bureaucracy , the Don Corleone principle or the Prince von Homburg effect .

Literary work

Bosetzky's literary focus was crime novels as well as historical novels with references to his hometown Berlin and his own biography. He occasionally used the fictional northern German town of Bramme as a petty-bourgeois-dominant row house environment, in which he often let some of his protagonists perform. Bosetzky explained: “I wanted to have a career with Hans Koschnick on the staff and therefore not burden the city. That's why I invented the place Bramme, which has the social reality of Bremen . ”Many other works followed in parallel to his career at a university of applied sciences.

In 1971 Bosetzky presented his first detective novel. Already there he used the pseudonym "-ky", as for the others, out of consideration for his professional position at a university. As "-ky" he let Oberkommissar Mannhardt take on the role of investigator in some of his crime novels . Even if under a pseudonym, but not denying the sociologist , his first crime novels in particular are committed to the zeitgeist of the 1970s and formulate social criticism in “left” jargon . Horst Bosetzky, along with Hansjörg Martin , Richard Hey and Michael Molsner, set the style for the so-called socio-crime novels , which in that decade stand out from other crime fiction as the new German crime novels and, in addition to pure entertainment, also the special social backgrounds of the people involved as well as general ones Tried to shed light on aspects of the overall social situation and their effects.

Filmed were his detective novels , one of us (1972, directed by Wolfgang Petersen et al with the actors.. Jurgen Prochnow and Klaus Schwarzkopf ) and No townhouse for Robin Hood (1979), which also with the prize for the best German-language crime novel and in France with the Prix Mystère de la critique was awarded. Bosetzky used its film premiere in 1981 to reveal the pseudonym "-ky" after years of speculation. In 1984 Fire for the Big Dragon (1982) was filmed for television with Peter Sattmann , Ulrike Luderer and Erdal Merdan , and in 1986 the detective novel Die Klette , which he wrote together with co-author Peter Heinrich .

In the 1970s he also wrote radio plays and in the 1980s screenplays for television, including for series such as Detective Office Roth , SOKO 5113 and Ein Fall für zwei , but also television games such as Die Klette and Happy End durch Drei , also short stories for the annual crime fiction volumes of the Blue Series published by Heyne Verlag .

Another literary focus arose from his ties to Berlin. In 1995 he started a multi-volume family saga with the novel Firewood for Potato Peelings, in which the author's autobiographical elements are combined with general contemporary history. Bosetzky also contributed several volumes to the chain novel, set in Berlin in the early 20th century, with the main character Kriminalkommissar CAP. His Berlin (be) knowledge can be found in addition to stories about the Berlin road and commuter trains as well as the reference book The Berlin-lexicon.

Bosetzky's memories of his childhood in Berlin in the post-war years: -ky's Berlin youth - memories in words and pictures , in collaboration with photographer Rengha Rodewill , were published in 2014. In 2017, an eight-part video interview about his memories of childhood and youth was published in the Berliner Kindheiten series , and in 2018 the 20-minute portrait film Bosetzky (director: Kristof Kannegießer).

Horst Bosetzky was buried on October 18, 2018 in the Schöneberg III cemetery in Berlin's Tempelhof-Schöneberg district . His grave is on field 17/13.

Offices and functions

From 1991 to 2001 Bosetzky was chairman and spokesman for the Syndikats , the association of German-speaking crime authors. In 2002 he was also one of the founding members of the nationwide group of authors of the Historical Roman Quo Vadis , whose first general assembly was held in November 2002 in Kulmbach. He was a member of the Association of German Writers (VS) and from May 2000 to June 2014 Chairman of the State Association VS Berlin .
