Hansjörg Martin

Hansjörg Martin (born November 1, 1920 in Leipzig ; † March 11, 1999 in Mallorca ) was a German writer . He was best known for his crime novels .

Life

Hansjörg Martin first completed an art degree at the Leipzig Art Academy. In 1941 he was drafted as a soldier and used on the Eastern Front and in the Netherlands. After the Second World War he worked as a painter, set designer, decorator and clown.

From 1963 he worked as a freelance writer. The publication of his first crime novel Dangerous Curiosity (1965) contributed significantly to the creation of a genre of its own, the new German crime novel . In his thirty-year career, Martin wrote around 35 detective novels, some of which were used as templates for television films (including the crime scene ). In addition, Martin also wrote scripts for crime series such as Hamburg Transit and It doesn't always have to be murder . In addition to many thrillers that appeared almost exclusively in the paperback series rororo thriller by Rowohlt Verlag , Martin wrote the “eco-thriller” Gegen den Wind , which was first published in 1984 by Bertelsmann and only in 1987 as a Rowohlt paperback.

In addition, Martin made a name for himself as the author of books for children and young people such as the Jocotobi Company series . He also wrote templates for children's radio plays and school radio features.

From 1963 he worked and lived as a freelance writer in Wedel , a suburb of Hamburg , where he was councilor for the SPD in the city council in local politics.

Martin was the official district writer in Hamburg-St. George . In 1986 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his services as “the founder of the new German crime novel” . In 1999 he died on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

In honor of Hansjörg Martin, the Association of German-language crime writers Syndikat has been awarding the Hansjörg Martin Prize for the best children's and youth crime thriller of the year at the annual Criminale since 2001 .
