The consequence is the film adaptation of the autobiographical novel of the same name by Alexander Ziegler , directed by Wolfgang Petersen .

action

The homosexual actor Martin Kurath met the prison guard's son, Thomas Manzoni, who was only 16 years old in prison. The two fall in love and move in together after Kurath's dismissal. This triggers violent outrage in those around them. Thomas' father enforces the admission of the boy to an educational institution in order to break the relationship. But the sensitive boy cannot cope with the accommodation there. Due to the consequences of his stay there, his psychological problems have become too great to continue the relationship satisfactorily. Thomas later attempts suicide and is admitted to a psychiatric clinic, from which he breaks out.

Literary template

The novel The Consequence is set in 1974 from the perspective of Martin Kurath's diary . The Swiss Alexander Ziegler processes his personal experiences in the book. He was two and a half years because of "seduction of minors to sodomy" detained .

background

Alexander Ziegler personally worked on the film adaptation of the novel, produced by Bernd Eichinger in 1977 and directed by Wolfgang Petersen . The shooting took place in March and April 1977 in Zurich and the surrounding area, Munich , on Lake Starnberg as well as in the Vechta correctional facility and on the Rhine . Nils Sustrate was responsible for the film music .

The consequence had its premiere on October 29, 1977 as part of the Hof Film Festival . The film was awarded the rating "valuable" and was nevertheless censored in its original version and, due to its content, which was perceived as explosive, was boycotted by Bayerischer Rundfunk when it was first broadcast on ARD on November 8, 1977 , because the latter refused to broadcast it. It opened in theaters on December 2, 1977.

The film was released on DVD in March 2008 as part of a complete retrospective by director Wolfgang Petersen (22 DVDs).

Reviews

"The emotionally overwhelmed film sees itself as a plea for tolerance and respect for homophiles."

"Despite the somewhat dramatic accessories [...] it [the story] is above all a natural love story in black and white - one of the most private and believable that has been on the screen for a long time."

"[...] sometimes, in the drawing of some negative contrasting figures, too crude didactic [...]. But the nuanced black and white photography and the incredibly intense interplay between Jürgen Prochnow and the 17-year-old layman Ernst Hannawald help over these weaknesses. This boy [...] plays his role with an authenticity and emotional consternation that is hardly ever seen on television. "
