action

Boeing VC-25A over Mount Rushmore

James Marshall, the President of the United States of America , was able to arrest the dreaded dictator General Ivan Radek, who had gained influence in the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan, in connection with the new terrorism policy and with the help of Russia . Some supporters of the ex-dictator, led by Ivan Korshunov, hijack Air Force One , the president's plane. They are supported in this by a traitor among the Secret Service agents named Gibbs, who gives them access to the weapons on board. Instead of using the escape pod to get to safety, the president hides on board the plane because he does not want to leave the plane without his family.

The machine was made an emergency landing at the German air force base at Ramstein Air Base , but the terrorists managed to get into the cockpit, shoot the pilots and take control of the aircraft themselves. In a spectacular maneuver in which they race almost head-on into another aircraft, they manage to restart the machine and set course for Kazakhstan. Shortly afterwards, the terrorists report to the Vice President in the White House and announce their demand: As long as General Radek is not released, a hostage will be executed every half hour. The first victim is National Security Advisor Doherty. In the meantime, President Marshall manages to take down some of the terrorists unnoticed and use a cell phone to contact the White House. To force Air Force One to land, he triggers the emergency fuel drain .

After discovering the lack of fuel, Korshunov asked the US to refuel Air Force One from the air using a KC-10 extender . Marshall, for his part, uses this opportunity to parachute freed hostages over the loading ramp. When the terrorists find out and blow up the door to the loading area, the refueling process is impaired by the resulting negative pressure - leaking kerosene ignites and causes the tanker to explode. Air Force One can barely escape this huge explosion. Marshall survives but is captured. Then Korshunov threatens the president, his wife and daughter to be executed if General Radek is not released immediately. Marshall obeys, but can overpower Korshunov a little later and bring Air Force One back under control with his men. The release decision was withdrawn in good time and General Radek was shot trying to escape.

As a result, Air Force One is attacked by MiG-29 interceptors belonging to armed forces loyal to Radek. F-15 fighters of the US Air Force come to the rescue in good time and can shoot down several enemy fighters. Since Air Force One was badly damaged in the fight, threatens to crash and there are no more parachutes, the president's family uses an attached connecting rope to transfer to a US Air Force transport aircraft. In this situation, Secret Service Agent Gibbs first reveals his true colors to the President when he kills a soldier and Major Caldwell. Thereupon Gibbs and Marshall fight for the last possibility of transport to the other plane. Marshall wins and Gibbs crashes with Air Force One on the Caspian Sea . Marshall is able to save himself on board the transport plane, which becomes Air Force One for the rest of the flight.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film had convinced him that Wolfgang Petersen was the best contemporary director for thrillers and action films. Petersen could do a lot from a modest starting point - which includes the “idiotic” script. The US President James Marshall portrayed by Ford is "charismatic" but "too good to be true". He followed ethical principles, which Berardinelli described as "fantastic". Berardinelli praised the portrayals of Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman.

Michael Haneke expresses himself critically in an interview: “When I look at Airforce One , for example , from Mr. Petersen, it is a bad piece of propaganda. But it's done so well that the audience doesn't even know it's a political film. They think that it would be a great action film, super exciting. "

“With Air Force One , Wolfgang Petersen has not conformed to the Hollywood conventions, but rather subordinated himself. What's more, his film is the complete negation of his multi-part Das Boot , a flying change to the flags. If the boat was about the hollowness of heroism and patriotism, then the mentally armed Petersen now snaps his heels together. [...] Despite all the technical perfection and solid tension dramaturgy, Air Force One remains a nuisance. It doesn't help that the film sometimes pretends that the villainous Korshunov's motives are morally understandable and even legitimate: The twisted alibi construct only serves to emotionally enhance power and glory. "

“Although on the level of a political soap opera and full of comic strip effects, the film gains an above-average level in the genre of action thriller thanks to the carefully crafted and dramaturgically calculated direction. Exciting, albeit fantastic, entertainment. "

Awards

The film was nominated for the Oscar film award in the categories of Best Sound and Best Editing . Harrison Ford won the Bambi . He was also nominated for the Blockbuster Entertainment Award and the MTV Movie Award . Gary Oldman was nominated for the Blockbuster Entertainment Award and the MTV Movie Award . Others

  • The "Air Force One" used in the film was a Boeing 747-146 from American International Airways with the registration number N703CK, a forerunner of Kalitta Air . It was repainted in Air Force One colors , which cost $ 300,000.
  • Air Force One flight scenes were also used in the series Welcome, Mrs. President .
  • The storyboard was drawn by, among others, the Berlin director and storyboarder Raymond Boy .
  • In the end credits General Ivan Radek's first name is given as Alexander. In addition, when Korshunov checked in, a monitor showed the first name Egor and not Ivan.
  • Donald Trump used Jerry Goldsmith's main musical theme in several campaign appearances in his 2016 presidential campaign. Attempts by producer Gail Katz to ban its use were fruitless.
