Dean Stockwell
Robert Dean Stockwell (born March 5, 1936 in North Hollywood , California ) is an American actor .
Acting career
Dean Stockwell was born to the actor couple Harry Stockwell and Elizabeth Veronica Stockwell. He started acting as a child. In 1945, 10-year-old Stockwell played his first leading role in the Hollywood musical Vacation in Hollywood alongside Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly . In 1947 he was the son of Gregory Peck in the Oscar-winning film Tabu der Gerechten , which earned him a Golden Globe Award in the category of best young actor . This was followed by the role of Nick Charles Jr., the son of William Powell and Myrna Loy , in the crime comedy The Song of the Thin Man (1947) and the title role in The Boy With Green Hair (1948), the feature film directorial debut by Joseph Losey . In 1950 he played the title role alongside Errol Flynn in the adventure film Kim - Secret Service in India, based on the novel by Rudyard Kipling . During this time, Stockwell was one of the most successful child actors in Hollywood. Unlike many other child stars, Stockwell was able to build on these successes in adulthood.
In the 1950s Stockwell gained experience as a stage actor, for example in a number of Broadway plays. In 1959 he returned to Hollywood with the role of the juvenile murderer Judd Steiner in the thriller The Compulsion to Evil . He had previously played the character on Broadway. For The Compulsion to Evil , he received the actor's award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959. Three years later he received his second actor award at the Cannes Film Festival : this time for his demanding role as the drunkard son of Katharine Hepburn in the Eugene O'Neill film A Long Day's Journey into the Night (1962), directed by Sidney Lumet . The award also went to his colleagues from the film, Ralph Richardson and Jason Robards . Katharine Hepburn received the award for best actress, so that the entire ensemble of the film was awarded in Cannes.
A little later, however, Stockwell voluntarily withdrew from the acting business and lived as a hippie for a few years . During this time, he only stood in front of the camera for occasional TV appearances. After temporarily working in the real estate business, he made another comeback in the 1970s. Stockwell then played high-profile supporting roles in numerous Hollywood films, including as a scientist in the science fiction film The Desert Planet (1984), as a seedy shooting club manager in the action comedy Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) alongside Eddie Murphy , and as a judge Harvey Hale in Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation of The Rainmaker (1997). In 1984, he played the worried brother of the missing Harry Dean Stanton in Wim Wenders ' classic film Paris, Texas . Stockwell played a prominent supporting role as the feminine, Roy Orbison- singing drug dealer Ben in David Lynch's cult film Blue Velvet (1986). For his portrayal of a mafia boss in the film The Mafiosi Bride from 1988, he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and was able to win two other film awards.
On American television, Stockwell has made regular guest roles in popular television series such as Bonanza , Columbo , Hart aber cordial and Das A-Team over the decades . In Germany he became known to the television audience from the beginning of the 1990s through the science fiction series Back to the Past (original title: Quantum Leap ): He played the role of Al , the holographic sidekick of Scott Bakula's main character, and was awarded the Golden Globe Award in 1990. In the 2000s, Stockwell took on recurring supporting roles in the television series JAG - On behalf of the honor (as SecNav Edward Sheffield ) and Battlestar Galactica (as John Cavil , main antagonist of the series). Dean Stockwell appeared in over 200 film and television productions between 1945 and 2015.
Private life
Stockwell has the 2nd Dan in the martial art Modern Arnis and is an instructor in this sport.
Stockwell is also an accomplished artist who created photographs and collages in the style of his friend Wallace Berman . As a friend of the musician Neil Young , he designed the cover for the album American Stars' n Bars . He also wrote the template for the title track of Young's 1970 album After the Gold Rush , which was actually a script draft for a film.
His older brother Guy Stockwell (1934-2002) was also an actor. Dean Stockwell was married twice. He married his first wife, Millie Perkins , on April 15, 1960, and they divorced two years later without children. In 1981 he married Joy Marchenko, who was divorced again in 2004. The marriage had two children: Austin (* 1983), Sophia (* 1985).
