They Nest - Tödliche Brut (Alternative title: Creepy Crawlers ) is an American horror film directed by Ellory Elkayem from 2000.

action

Benjamin Cahill works as a doctor in Luining Medical Center of Boston . He is divorced, a dry alcoholic and suffers from poor concentration during medical interventions, which is why he is no longer acceptable for the clinic and is sent on compulsory leave. To relax, he decides to move into a house for a while, which he had bought with his wife on a small island off Maine .

However, since it is the parents' house of Jack and Eamon Wald, who claim the house for themselves, there is friction, which is stopped by Sheriff Hobbs. Cahill also has to deal with constant power outages and cockroaches in his refrigerator, but also meets the versatile Nell who works in the local shop and on the docks.

At the same time there are mysterious deaths on the island caused by cockroach-like African "Armadillo beetles" that washed up inside a dead sailor. After the paralyzing bites of these insects, usually in the hundreds, a kind of "queen" lays countless eggs in the body of the victim, where new beetles grow and feed on the innards of their victim. After some residents have been killed, including one of the Walds and Sheriff Hobbs, the remaining survivors decide to flee the island.

During another quarrel between Cahill and Eamon Wald, the fleeing people are suddenly attacked by flying beetles. The insects have evolved, killing Eamon Wald and two other men, while Cahill, Nell and two other residents try to escape by boat. On the open sea, however, the fleeing people are attacked by the flying swarm, but they can hide under the boat. Cahill finally manages to set fire to a gas station at the dock with a signal pistol, apparently killing all the animals.

At the end of the film you can see one of the beetles crawling out of a piece of driftwood and flying towards the skyline of a city.

criticism

The lexicon of international films ruled that the film was a “[k] conventional horror film” that offered no ideas “from the disgusting front of trash and B-film” . The film is based on "blatantly [on] templates from the 50s" and builds on the viewer's disgust for cockroaches .
