content

In a law class during his senior semester at Memphis State University , budding attorney Rudy Baylor, recently hired at the seedy Bruiser Stone's office, is tasked with a case of malicious failure to pay by an insurance company . His client Dot Black had taken out health insurance with Great Benefit Life Insurance for her son Donny Ray . When Donny Ray developed leukemia, however, the insurance company refused to pay the treatment costs for a bone marrow transplant .

Rudy Baylor finally files a US $ 10 million lawsuit against the insurance company, only to be faced with an overwhelming force of experienced lawyers, especially star lawyer Leo F. Drummond, at the start of the trial as a complete beginner.

Via detours, Rudy and his colleague Deck Shifflet, with whom he makes himself independent from Bruiser Stone and who helps him with his experience, to obtain incriminating evidence, and he can convince the jury of the Blacks' legitimate claims as well as a systematic malicious refusal to perform convince with Great Benefit : Only around 12% of the claims were paid out in the previous year. The jury imposed a fine of $ 50 million on the insurance company, the highest such judgment in Memphis, which is why Rudy Baylor is called the rainmaker .

The insurance company, however, files for bankruptcy a short time later, also because money was embezzled from top management in order to avoid paying the 50 million dollars. Both the Blacks, who wanted to donate the money to a non-profit association for leukemia sufferers, Baylor and his partner, to whom a third of the money would have been granted, and the lawyers of the insurance company go away empty-handed. Dot Black is still satisfied because the fraudulent insurance company has been stopped.

For personal reasons, Baylor decides not to continue practicing law at the moment and is considering teaching law instead.

background

The term rainmaker is used to refer to lawyers, business people and politicians who bring in a lot of money; so was z. B. Barack Obama called the rainmaker for the Democratic Party . The term is based on the summer rain dance of the North American Indians, in which the main dancer is the rainmaker .

John Grisham describes the business model of certain health insurance companies in the United States, which promise a lot for relatively low premiums, but when someone gets sick, they do little or nothing.

Before the actual shooting, Francis Ford Coppola staged a two-day mock trial in order to familiarize the actors - above all Matt Damon and Jon Voight - with the customs in court. Under professional supervision, the actors were taught the approach of a lawyer. In order to create as much authenticity as possible, all legal documents were imitated as true to the original as possible, in some cases even by a law firm specially hired for this purpose.

Reviews

“A thriller that largely follows the pattern of previous film adaptations of John Grisham fabrics, whereby its ingenuity does not go beyond a technically clean staging. Except for the supporting roles, the film does not allow any deeper insights into the confused and distorted legal system of the USA. "

“John Grisham films are a very special kind of court film. Especially because the stories of the southern author are overflowing with clichés, but at the same time create an apparently rather unidealized picture of the judiciary. (…) Coppola narrates extremely precisely, with great attention to detail, and it is precisely this patience that makes the Grisham material more than one dared to hope for. Three different cases are mixed up and this gives ample opportunity to portray the everyday life of a provincial attorney. Here the film is intelligent and subtle, smart and full of interesting details. You can tell the director has fun playing with Grisham's black and white painting. "
