Jack is an American drama film directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1996. The main role was played by Robin Williams .
action
Karen Powell gives birth to a child named Jack after an unusually short pregnancy of just ten weeks. Jack suffers from a rare genetic defect that causes the cells in his body to age four times faster than normal. At birth, his body therefore resembled that of a nine-month-old child. He is otherwise healthy and at the age of ten looks like a forty-year-old man.
Jack is tutored up to the age of ten by the private tutor Lawrence Woodruff, as his parents wanted to protect him from the crooked looks and teasing others. But Jack, like the other children his age, wants to go to school. Woodruff stands up for him with his parents and he is allowed to attend a public school from now on.
When Jack goes to school, he is initially not accepted by the other children. He later befriends Louis Durante, whom he often helps in tricky situations. Over time, the other students also accept it.
Reviews
The lexicon of international film sees the film as “a plea for an intensified life experience in the face of death, which for a children's and family film raises serious questions that are answered in a playful way; attention to detail and staged on a small scale. "
Roger Ebert notes in the Chicago Sun-Times that Robin Williams often plays loners who are not particularly physically fit and suggests that Williams must have been the first choice for the role. However, he criticizes that it remains unclear whether the film is made for children or adults.
While Cinema 6/1997 finds the film “neither original nor funny”, Die Woche in its June 6, 1997 issue calls the cast of the main role with Robin Williams “not very happy”; “Tearfully meant, but precocious-looking sentences about life, aging and death then finish the story.” The reviewer also scoffs at the fact that “the static, almost gerontological staging compared to epics like" The Godfather "” attracts the viewer Watching age four times faster than usual.
