Francine Joy "Fran" Drescher (born September 30, 1957 in New York City ) is an American actress , producer and author .

Live and act

She is the younger of Morty and Sylvia Drescher's two daughters. Her parents are of Romanian-Jewish origin, her great-grandmother was born in Focșani . Drescher grew up in Flushing and attended Hillcrest High School, where she also met her boyfriend and future husband, Peter Marc Jacobson. She graduated in 1975 and then studied acting at Queens College , while she also successfully completed a cosmetics school .

Drescher got her first small role in 1977 in Saturday Night Fever . Due to another role offer (American Hot Wax) and the hope that more would join, she moved to Los Angeles . That same year, on November 4th, she married her childhood friend who was aiming for a career as a producer. Drescher finally became known through her participation in the film This Is Spinal Tap (1984).

On January 5, 1985, two armed men broke into her apartment , one of whom raped her , while her husband was threatened with a gun and unable to help her. After therapy , Drescher decided to continue working as an actress. The rapist was sentenced to prison. Drescher's first autobiography deals with rape and the need to emerge stronger from such traumatic experiences.

From 1993 to 1999 the CBS series The Nanny ran with great success in the USA and Europe. Drescher not only played the lead role, but also worked as a writer and producer for the series. The nanny has been nominated for several television awards ( Emmy and Golden Globe ) over the years . At the same time, Drescher became a permanent guest on talk shows . In 1999 the sitcom was discontinued after a total of 146 episodes.

After Drescher had two tumors removed from her breast in 1983, doctors diagnosed her with a tumor in her uterus in June 2000 . She was successfully operated on in a Los Angeles clinic and did not require chemotherapy. She wrote the book Cancer Schmancer about this experience and her life after the first biography . In 2007 she founded the “Cancer Schmancer Movement”, which is primarily concerned with the early detection of cancer in women; since then she has devoted herself mainly to this organization.

From April 2005 on the US television station The WB ran the series Living with Fran, in which she played the lead role and was also active again as a producer. The series was discontinued on May 17, 2006 after two seasons.

Drescher have long been said to have ambitions for a seat in the United States Congress . In 2008 she supported the presidential candidacy of New York Senator Hillary Clinton . When the latter had to give up their seat in the Senate due to their appointment as US Secretary of State in the Obama cabinet , Drescher expressed their interest.

In September 2009 Fran Drescher released her first song, Eye For An Eye, which has since been available exclusively through iTunes . In 2010 she had her own talk show, The Fran Drescher Show, which was discontinued after four episodes.

In 2010 Drescher began developing the sitcom Happily Divorced with ex-husband Jacobson . It ran from June 15, 2011 on TV Land . Fran Drescher herself played the main role of the florist Fran, who after 18 years of marriage learns that her husband is gay and is getting a divorce. Since they cannot afford to move out, they continue to live under one roof. The series was discontinued after the second season in August 2013.

Private

In 1996 Drescher separated from her husband after 23 years, followed by divorce in 1999. The marriage was childless; Her ex-husband publicly acknowledged his homosexuality a little later. In 2014 Drescher married Shiva Ayyadurai . In 2016 the couple separated again.
