action

Fran Lovett runs a flower shop in Los Angeles, and her husband Peter is a real estate agent. One night he wakes her up and tells her that he's gay. The two are getting a divorce. But they find that their house has lost so much in value due to the collapse of the real estate market in the USA that they could not finance two apartments with the proceeds. So inevitably they still live together after the divorce and try - each in his own way - to find the man for life. They are supported by Fran's parents, their school friend Judi and Fran's employee Cesar.

Development and production

United States

Happily Divorced is inspired by the life stories of the series creators Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson. The two were already a couple in high school and married in 1978. In 1999 they got divorced. Jacobson later came out to Drescher as gay, but the two remained good friends. In 2010, the couple, who previously worked together on Drescher's hit sitcom The Nanny , began developing the new show based on their life experiences. Originally Drescher only planned to write and produce Happily Divorced , but has decided to take on the lead role. In November 2010, TV Land gave the green light for a Pilot episode. On March 21, 2011, the broadcaster announced that it would produce a first 10-episode season. The show was recorded in front of a live audience at CBS Radford Studios in "Studio City" near Los Angeles. As with Fran Drescher's sitcom The Nanny , the opening credits are animated with specially composed music and introduce the couple's story (getting to know each other, wedding, coming out, divorce, living together). In this sitcom - also as in The Nanny - Drescher does without another role name and is called "Fran" here as well. The series premiered on June 15, 2011 after the show Hot in Cleveland .

On July 20, 2011, TV Land announced that it would produce a second, twelve-episode season of Happily Divorced , which aired on March 7, 2012. On April 29, 2012, on the day of the TV Land Awards 2012, the broadcaster announced that it would extend the second season originally planned for twelve episodes by twelve more episodes, so that the second season formed a full season with a total of 24. The second half aired between November 28, 2012 and February 13, 2013.

In August 2013, TV Land announced that the series would be discontinued.

Germany

The German-language first broadcast took place from July 10, 2013 on the pay-TV channel Glitz * .

For the first time on free TV, all 34 episodes ran on October 16, 2014 in the ARD program Einsfestival .

International

Endemol has sold Happily Divorced to several countries. The show was sold by SBS 6 in the Netherlands , SABC in South Africa , Shaw TV in Canada , Comedy Central in Italy, MTV in South America and TVNZ in New Zealand . Similar negotiations with a German company for Happily Divorced will be announced in the future. There are also advanced negotiations in India , Poland and Sweden .

reception

Even before it was first broadcast, there was a lot of excitement about the new show in the USA, because with The Nanny , Drescher created one of the successful formats of the 1990s. The first episode of Happily Divorced was just as successful: it was watched by a total of 4.4 million viewers on the small channel TV Land and was more than four times the channel average. Happily Divorced made a significant contribution to making June 15, 2011 TV Land's second most successful day.

First reviews are mixed. David Hinckley wrote for the New York Daily News that "a very interesting story is likely to develop, even though the number of one-liners that was uncharacteristically untypical for a series premiere." Brian Lowry of Variety found the series " all too obviously gay Filled with prejudices, but a must for Drescher fans ”. Mark A. Perigard's review in The Boston Herald was thoroughly empathic; he thinks that "TV Land, as a young and still quite small broadcaster, has finally found a perfect format with Happily Divorced alongside the huge success Hot in Cleveland ."
