Cyndi Lauper
Cynthia Ann Stephanie "Cyndi" Lauper (born June 22, 1953 in Queens , New York City , New York ) is an American singer , songwriter and actress . In the 1980s she celebrated international success with hits like Girls Just Want to Have Fun , Time After Time , She Bop , All Through the Night , True Colors , Change of Heart and I Drove All Night .
Childhood and youth
Cyndi Lauper was born Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper on June 22, 1953 in New York City. Her father is Fred Lauper of Swiss and German descent, her mother is Cathrine Dominique (actually Catarina Papaleone ) from Campania in southern Italy (other sources indicate Sicily ). Cyndi Lauper grew up with her mother, stepfather, and two siblings, Fred and Ellen, on 104th Street in an immigrant neighborhood in Queens , New York . Cyndi became enthusiastic about music very early on and learned to play the guitar. According to her own statements, her academic performance was poor. After frequently changing schools, she only managed to graduate on the fourth attempt.
Career
Beginnings
Lauper left her parents' home and dared to take the step towards independence. She began to work as a temporary worker in a friend's second-hand shop, where she discovered the interest in extravagant clothing, which was so important for her later music career. During her first appearances in public, her shrill stage outfit in particular moved into the focus of reporting. During this time she also met David Wolff , with whom she then lived in a small apartment. He not only became her life partner, but also her manager and in this role began to introduce her to key figures in the music scene, which did not seem to be fruitful in the initial phase. Lauper toured the New York club scene with numerous cover bands. In later interviews she was derogatory about this time. Songs from this creative period, such as Israel Lights , according to her own statements, did not correspond to her musical style, as she saw herself as a rock singer. The high frequency of the performances led to an overstimulation of her vocal cords in 1977, which forced her to take a year off.
In 1979 Cyndi Lauper released her first single, a cover version of the Fleetwood Mac song You Make Lovin 'Fun . However, this single was only released in small numbers and Lauper himself did not own a single copy for years. It wasn't until the late 1990s that a fan gave her a copy as a gift. She judges her commercial debut rather critically. You should just sing and sound like Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks .
When David Wolff introduced her to John Turi that same year, it turned out to be a stroke of luck for her further career. With Turi, Johnny Murelli, Arthur Neilson and Lee Brovitz she founded the band "Blue Angel". In this formation, an album of the same name was released by Polydor , which reached number 37 on the charts in the Netherlands . The arrangements were shaped by the style of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
1980-1989
In 1979 a new type of musical woman developed in the USA through the enormous success of Pat Benatar , self-confident and also able to bring out successful rock. This development made it easier for Cyndi Lauper to be heard by the record companies.
In 1983 she was signed by Epic , and Rick Chertoff produced with her the album She's So Unusual , which was recorded over large parts by members of the American folk rock formation The Hooters . Initially ridiculed by radio stations and rarely played, her video Girls Just Want to Have Fun was broadcast frequently on MTV and the single became a hit. The album was also a success, She's So Unusual sold 15 million copies worldwide, making it the most successful debut album by a solo artist at the time. With the success, Lauper's self-confidence also grew. Her style of clothing, often ridiculed, had a decisive influence on the fashion of the eighties. The singles Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time - the latter written together with “The Hooters” keyboarder Rob Hyman , who also took on the second voice in the studio - achieved high chart positions and their music videos are seen as defining the style of the industry. She was one of the first MTV stars. She completed a major tour of the US states and provoked a national scandal with the single She Bop by openly addressing the subject of masturbation , which led to boycotts of numerous radio stations. The resulting publicity was more conducive to the success of the single. Promoting the album took so much time, according to Lauper, that she let family members and friends play along in her music videos so that they could spend more time with them.
From 1984 to 1985 Lauper appeared in wrestling shows of the then World Wrestling Federation , in which she acted as the manager of Wendi Richter. David Wolff and WWF boss Vince McMahon made these appearances possible. Cyndi Lauper later said that she enjoyed it but that it hindered her in her musical activities. Therefore it stayed with a few appearances, u. a. at the first WrestleMania .
Lauper sang for USA for Africa in January 1985 and in the same year contributed Good Enough to Richard Donner's film The Goonies . This collaboration led to a distancing from the record industry. She disliked being involved in the marketing machinery that surrounded the film. While shooting the accompanying music video, she caught a bad cold, which forced her to cancel her participation in Live Aid .
1986 Lauper's second album , True Colors, was released. It showed the singer with brightly colored hair, but according to many critics, more musically and artistically mature. Despite the hit single True Colors , which made it to number 1 on the US charts, the album fell short of commercial expectations. Nevertheless, according to her own assessment, the accompanying tour marked the high point of her artist's life. The massive security measures led to an increasing distance from the fans, which prompted Lauper to develop her career in a different direction. This was also noticeable in the private and professional separation from David Wolff.
In 1988 Lauper stood in front of the camera for her Hollywood debut Vibes - The Psychic Hunt for the Glowing Pyramid . The performance earned her harsh criticism. Many observers saw the film as merely a vehicle tailored purely to the star, without any artistic independence. Hole in My Heart , the single from the soundtrack for this film, showed the garish, shrill Cyndi Lauper again, but could not build on earlier sales successes.
Subsequently, work began on the album A Night to Remember , which was released in 1989. Lauper tried to redefine her image as elegant and sexy at the same time. Despite the great popularity from the music industry, Lauper himself later expressed dissatisfaction with the production. Although she wrote most of the tracks herself, due to massive influence on the part of the record company, she was pressed into a corset that did not correspond to her personality. The fans also found it difficult to accept the new, elegant Cyndi Lauper. So the album fell far short of sales expectations and Lauper began to withdraw into her private life.
1990-1999
Until 1993 she made herself a bit rare, but continued to perform and in 1990 performed at Roger Waters ' performance of The Wall on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin . 1990 was also the year she shot her second feature film: Moon Over Miami . The film was panned by both the critics and Lauper himself; however, she met and fell in love with David Thornton on the set . The two married in 1991.
It was Thornton who persuaded her to record a new album; so she managed to bring out an album with Hat Full of Stars in 1993, which met her ideas and also met with approval from the critics. Also in 1993, Lauper sang the female part on the Hooters' single Boys Will Be Boys .
Her label Epic was not behind her work, so the promotion was also low, but that changed again for Twelve Deadly Cyns . This best-of album was released in 1994 and contained its last big hit with its own cover version (Hey Now) Girls Just Want to Have Fun . During this time Lauper began to stand up for the rights of homosexuals , which earned her a high reputation in the gay subculture and paved the way for becoming a homosexual icon.
They were also seen increasingly in film and television productions. For her guest role as Marianne in the sitcom Crazy About You , she was nominated twice for an Emmy and won it once.
Sisters of Avalon was published as early as 1996 , on which Lauper wrote and produced all the songs with Jan Pulsford . The female duo surprised with unfamiliar tones: Superficiality and hypocrisy (including in politics) were branded, paired with some hard guitar riffs. Parts of the album served as the soundtrack for the film A Light in My Heart with Gena Rowlands , Gérard Depardieu and David Thornton.
When she was supposed to be promoting her album, Lauper got pregnant. Despite pregnancy, she appeared in the opening act for Tina Turner. Declyn Wallace Thornton Lauper was born on November 19, 1997.
The collaboration with Epic ended with a Christmas album that was released in 1998 and contained traditional and original songs. In the time after that, Lauper was no less active: She participated in the soundtrack to the cult film A Night at the Roxbury with the title Disco Inferno , which received a Grammy nomination in the Best Dance Recording category , but ultimately lost to Madonna .
In 1999 Lauper had a guest appearance on the television series The Simpsons (season 10, episode 11).
2000-2009
In the following years she could be heard on various soundtracks, toured several times with Cher and was also on the album Blowback with the song Five Days by Tricky . A new contract with Edel America followed, but the label went bankrupt due to bad management. Instead of the album Shine , only an EP of the same name was released in 2001 , which Cyndi Lauper distributed via her own website.
In 2003 she got a new contract with Epic, where she promptly released the most successful album since A Night to Remember with At Last in the USA . She herself described the album as a collection of songs that represent the soundtrack of her life. With numbers like Stay , Walk On By or La vie en rose , she tried to take the listener on a journey through time to the 1950s and 1960s. This was followed by an extensive tour through the USA, Japan and, for the first time in years, Australia. In the course of her doctorate, she performed again in Germany for the first time since 1996. She was also nominated again for a Grammy (in the category Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist (s) for Unchained Melody ).
Outwardly, too, she showed a change. When asked about this change and the apparent turning towards the “normal”, Lauper himself said that it would by no means be normal and also not ordinary; a woman who tries to be sexy and elegant at the age of 50 is by no means ordinary, because she has always hated being ordinary herself.
In 2004 Shine was released as a complete album, but only in Japan , where it did not make it into the top 100 of the local charts.
In 2005, Lauper appeared in an episode in the hit US series Queer as Folk . She played herself and gave a benefit concert for homosexual interests. The episode premiered on German television on March 6, 2008.
On March 3, 2006 Lauper's album The Body Acoustic was released in Europe . It includes rearranged versions of their great hits recorded in collaboration with various artists including Sarah McLachlan , Shaggy , Jeff Beck and Ani DiFranco . One example is She Bop , which was recorded as a guitar ballad . On The Body Acoustic are also two new songs I'll Be Your River and Above the Clouds present, as well as some video clips, because the album as a DualDisc came on the market. According to the first press release, Lauper was supposed to sing with Kelly Osbourne Girls Just Want to Have Fun , but instead the duo Puffy AmiYumi from Japan are on the album.
In the spring of 2006, Lauper successfully performed the musical version of Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera on Broadway. In June 2007 she toured the United States as headliners on the True Colors Tour with Erasure , Debbie Harry , The Dresden Dolls , The Misshapes and Gossip . The proceeds from this tour went to the Human Rights Campaign , which campaigns for the rights of gay and transsexuals. Special guests included: Rosie O'Donnell , Rufus Wainwright and Indigo Girls . The True Colors Tour started its second round in summer 2008. Also involved in the tour were: The B-52’s , Indigo Girls , Joan Armatrading , Joan Jett and the Blackhearts , Regina Spektor , Tegan and Sara , Wanda Sykes , Nona Hendryx , Deborah Cox , Andy Bell , The Cliks , The Puppini Sisters and Girl in the Coma .
Already after the first True Colors tour Lauper announced a new album, for which the first promotional appearances took place in connection with the second True Colors tour . Bring Ya to the Brink was released on May 27, 2008 in the US and was released in Europe in August of the same year. Lauper's first album with new material since 1997 should, according to her, be predominantly rhythmic and danceable, but also address political issues. To do this, she worked with European house and electronic artists such as Digital Dog , Basement Jaxx , The Scumfrog , Dragonette and Kleerup . Bring Ya to the Brink was received quite positively by the trade press and compared to the work of Madonna and Kylie Minogue . It was also nominated in the USA for the Grammy Award 2009 in the Best Electronic / Dance Album category. On February 18, 2009, the remix album Floor Remixes was released in Japan . Freedombunch , Soul Seekerz and Tom Novy contributed remixes for this album. A mash-up single from Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Set Your Heart under the title Girls Just Wanna Set Your Heart was released in Japan in January 2009 .
In autumn 2008 Lauper embarked on an extensive European tour, her first in more than ten years. Stops on this tour were, among others, Cologne and Vienna . The tour then continued in South America , but the planned final concert in Caracas did not take place. According to information from Internet blogger Perez Hilton , this was done through the intervention of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez after Lauper publicly supported Barack Obama and campaigned for gay rights.
In the autumn of the same year a collaboration with the Swedish rock group The Hives followed in the form of an anti-Christmas carol. A Christmas Duel was made available for download from the official The Hives homepage in late November 2008 and was released as a download single in early December 2008. In the same year Lauper starred in the Serbian film Here and There and also wrote a song for it; in the film her husband David Thornton has a leading role.
Since 2010
In 2010, Lauper again draws attention to itself and the equality of homosexuals with its True Colors find. In addition, she worked with Lady Gaga on the Viva Glam Collection by MAC Cosmetics , where they jointly promoted lipsticks that were sold for the benefit of the “MAC Aids Fund”. She also appeared in the US reality show Celebrity Apprentice .
At the same time, the first information about her new album came out. It was released on June 22, 2010, Memphis Blues in the USA on CD and vinyl and is assigned to the blues genre. Lauper worked for this with artists such as Allen Toussaint and BB King .
Lauper also wrote the music and the text for the musical Kinky Boots , for which she received a Tony Award in 2013 . This makes her the first female composer to win a Tony Award in the Best Score category for work done alone. The musical was nominated for a total of 13 Tonys and won six pieces. The album recording won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album; it was the second Grammy for Lauper.
In September 2015 Cyndi Lauper announced at a press conference that he wanted to record a country album. In December 2015 she released the country song "Hard Candy Christmas" and said that the album "Detour" would be released in the first half of 2016. In April 2016 she was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame (star number 2577). In the same year Cyndi Lauper went on a European tour and also played concerts in Germany.
