Magnum PI is an American crime series that has aired on CBS since September 2018 and is a remake of the series Magnum , which also ran on CBS from 1980 to 1988. In Germany, VOX secured the broadcasting rights. The series is about the private detective Thomas Magnum ( Jay Hernández ) in Hawaii . The other leading roles are Perdita Weeks , Zachary Knighton , Stephen Hill , Tim Kang and Amy Hill .

production

In October 2017 it was announced that CBS was planning to produce a remake of the Magnum series. This should Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim , who are already on their joint work in Hawaii Five-0 knew when showrunner act. Tom Selleck , who played the main character Thomas Magnum in the original series, was not very enthusiastic about this announcement. Many Twitter users were also annoyed that Selleck would not be seen in the lead role. While this declined early guest appearances in the new edition, Roger E. Mosley , the original actor of TC , plays a supporting role in the episode A Kiss Before Dying . Larry Manetti , the original actor in Rick , will have an appearance in the second season.

In January 2018, CBS ordered a pilot episode in which, as it became known in February, Jay Hernández would play the title role. In preparation, Hernández said he watched some episodes of the original . Shortly before, it was announced that Justin Lin would direct the series launch. In early March Perdita Weeks was cast in the role of Juliet Higgins . This means that the second character from the original series has already been slightly modified for the remake. While Higgins was still a man in Magnum and his first name was Jonathan , Thomas Magnum's military background has been modernized from a veteran of the Vietnam War to a veteran of the war in Afghanistan . Furthermore, two more figures were taken from the original series. Zachary Knighton embodies Orville "Rick" Wright and Stephen Hill is as Theodore "TC" Calvin seen. In July 2018, Tim Kang also joined the cast.

Finally, in early May 2018, CBS gave the green light for a 13-part first season and released a first trailer in the middle of the month. During the filming of the series, most of which take place in Honolulu , the film crew is said to have shown increasing inconsiderate behavior towards residents and shopkeepers.

After the first four episodes were broadcast, CBS ordered a full season of 20 episodes. In January 2019, the series was extended by CBS for a second season. The German-language first broadcast began on April 10, 2019 on Puls 4 and ended on August 28, 2019 on VOX . Production of the second season began in early July 2019 with a traditional blessing from the main cast and crew. In May 2020, the series was extended by a third season, which will be filmed from 14 September 2020 in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic and is expected to be broadcast from November 2020. Previously, in July 2020, it was announced that the contract between CBS and Peter M. Lenkov had been terminated with immediate effect due to misconduct by him, making Eric Guggenheim the sole showrunner of the series.

During San Diego Comic-Con 2018 , showrunner Peter M. Lenkov announced that there would be multiple crossovers with the Hawaii Five-0 series . In the first season, Kimee Balmilero as Dr. Noelani Cunha can be seen in a recurring supporting role in the series, while Kamekona Tupuola, played by Taylor Wily , appears in two episodes and Kala Alexander as Kawika and Dennis Chun as Sergeant Duke Lukela can be seen in one episode each. Thus, Magnum PI joins the series universe around JAG - On behalf of the honor , Navy CIS and its offshoots, Hawaii Five-0 , Scorpion and MacGyver . In September 2019, Lenkov said they had developed a story for a joint series event with Hawaii Five-0 , which finally came about in the two episodes on January 3, 2020. Jay Hernández, Perdita Weeks, Stephen Hill and Zachary Knighton appeared in the Hawaii Five-0 episode, while Beulah Koale as Junior Reigns , Meaghan Rath as Tani Rey and Katrina Law as Quinn Liu in the Magnum PI episode were seen. In addition, Balmilero, Wily and Chun appear again in the second season. In addition to these, Shawn Mokuahi Garnett, known from Hawaii Five-0, can be seen as Flippa and William Forsythe as Harry Brown . Even Larry Manetti took his role as Nicky "The Kid" Demarco again.

characters

Thomas Magnum
Lieutenant Thomas Sullivan Magnum is a former US Navy SEAL with Mexican roots who served in Afghanistan but was temporarily stationed in Iraq. There he met his comrades and later friends Rick, TC and Sebastian Nuzo as well as Hannah, a CIA agent. During his stationing in Afghanistan, he developed a relationship with the latter and even wanted to propose to her. But the agent betrayed her friends and did business with criminals, so that the four were captured on return from a mission in the Hindu Kush. As a token of their solidarity, even during this 18-month imprisonment in the Korengal Valley , everyone has been wearing the Lorraine cross as a ring since then . His father, a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War , died when he was very young, after which he began to play baseball. This also resulted in his enthusiasm for the Detroit Tigers , in addition to his passion for surf ski paddling. His mother died while he was a prisoner of war, which he only found out after he was liberated. He grew up in Virginia and speaks two languages fluently as well as broken Pashtun . In Hawaii, in addition to his work as a detective, he is also the security officer of the writer Robin Masters, in whose guest house he lives. Over time, he begins a relationship with defense attorney Abby Miller, which ends abruptly when she loses her license and moves to the mainland. His distinguishing feature is a red Ferrari 488 Spider , which he often borrows from Masters.
Juliet Higgins
Juliet Higgins is a former British MI6 agent who was stationed in Kiev and Prague, among other places, and was the only agent who was able to undermine the Russian secret police. In Prague she met her fiancé Richard, with whom she wanted to leave the secret service and start a family. But when he was murdered by the hit man Viper in Istanbul and she tried, contrary to the instructions of the secret service, to track down Viper and take revenge on him, she was released from MI6. After being kicked out, she was hired as the head of security for the Saudi prince. She is good at computers, is fluent in Arabic and Mandarin, and has served as well. She later took a job with Robin Masters as majordomo of the estate where she lives with Magnum and occasionally assists Magnum with his cases. After both can turn off Viper together, the MI6 offers her rehabilitation, but she decides instead to offer to become Magnum's partner. When her American visa threatens to expire, her Magnum offers a marriage of convenience , but she first decides to enter into one with TC so as not to endanger the employment relationship with Magnum. Due to moral doubts, she cancels a wedding later, but with the support of Robin Masters, who makes her the owner of his property and thus a business woman, she can stay on Oʻahu. In her childhood she played football for a long time and was also a member of a golf club. Her mother suffered from Alzheimer's disease and passed away.
Orville "Rick" Wright
Orville "Rick" Wright is a former US Marine and gunner from Afghanistan, where he met and befriended Thomas Magnum. After his military service, he lived in Chicago for a few weeks, but then moved to Hawaii, where he did not know what to do with himself at first. After he wanted to go back to the military, but was not accepted, the writer Robin Masters got him a job as a bartender in the beach club "King Kamehameha", where he worked his way up to manager. He later decided to stop working at the beach club and buy the La Mariana bar instead. However, after no bank wanted to grant him a loan for his project, he finally found a suitable investor in TC. In addition to this job, he occasionally supports Magnum in his detective agency and helps to build houses for veterans. His parents separated in his childhood, after which the criminal Icepick became a father figure to him, while his biological father died. He has romantic feelings for his good friend Toni, but she leaves the island.
Theodor "TC" Calvin
Theodor "TC" Calvin is a former helicopter pilot for the US Marines and was stationed in Afghanistan, where he met Rick and Magnum. In his youth he played football and was even a player on an NFL team for one season , but was not used. He also danced and later studied art history after he was not accepted at an art academy. After his mother abandoned the family, he grew up with his single father. When he had to go to jail after an armed robbery he wanted to support the family, TC lived with his grandparents for six years. His father's jail term ended just before TC joined the Marines. After his military service he runs the helicopter company "Island Hoppers", which offers island hopping and sightseeing flights, trains youngsters in foot and baseball and occasionally supports Magnum in his detective agency. He later hires Shammy, a former soldier in a wheelchair, and helps build houses for veterans. Prior to his military service, he had a relationship with a woman named Teresa, which broke up when she believed him dead while in captivity.
Teuila "Kumu" Tuileta
The widow Teuila Tuileta is the curator of the Robin Masters estate and also works at the Hawaii Cultural Center. Before that, she worked in her uncle's construction company. Kumu's family has lived in Hawaii since the 18th century. Her late husband committed adultery several times and fathered a child with another woman. Her nickname "Kumu" means "teacher". She knows golf well.
Detective Gordon Katsumoto
Detective Gordon Katsumoto is an investigator from the HPD who is responsible for serious crimes through his work in the robbery and homicide department. He is rather critical of Magnum, as he does not approve of the private detective interfering in his cases. After the two became closer over time, Magnum abused Katsumoto's trust, which is why they both temporarily distance themselves again. That's one of the reasons why he wants to keep his private life, such a relationship with the judge Majorie Kamaka, away from Magnum. He has a teenage son named Dennis who lives with his ex-wife on the North Shore . He also had a big sister named Kimberly, who became a drug addict, stole her parents and eventually died after Katsumoto refused to help her after numerous withdrawals. His grandfather once came into the country illegally.

When the private detective at Hayek's property finally finds out that the target person is a US informant, one of the CIA agents turns out to be the criminal Ivan, whom Hayek got in the way of his business. Reviews

The first season was able to convince 57% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 48 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

positive

Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times is very positive about the series and explains that Magnum PI doesn't actually make any mistakes. You take on the charm and morality of the original and show the audience the well-known characters, including their surroundings, atmosphere and attitude to life. Jay Hernández is charming and appealingly human, embodying a modern version of Thomas Magnum , which does not correspond to the physical appearance of Tom Selleck . The plot, on the other hand, is relevant and can score with action and wit.

Mick Joest from CinemaBlend.com is also enthusiastic about his review. Magnum PI is a good mixture of action and devotion to the original series, the story of which has been modernized and adapted to the current time. The series has a good narrative speed, has some subtle or even obvious references to the original and feels exactly like it. The whole thing is also supported by a talented cast, with Hernández having the right attitude and performing his own version of the character. According to Joest, the series also makes some minor but not serious mistakes. So some jokes would not ignite and the voiceover would not serve the plot, but only the background story of the characters.

Brian Lowry from CNN also got a rather positive assessment . According to him, Magnum PI lures viewers with curiosity and nostalgia and ultimately keeps them with the same characteristics as the original series did: the same mix of action, comedy and the Hawaiian scenery. In principle, it could be any detective series, but it rises and falls with the appeal of Hernández.

USA Today's Kelly Lawler describes Magnum PI as a solid and reliable, if harmless, action series. Visually and in terms of tonality, the remake is clearly different from the original, there are better stunts and better special effects. The biggest weakness, however, are the rather superficial characters, especially the charming but boring Thomas Magnum . You missed out on the Latin American origins of Hernández and give his character an exciting background story. Still, the series is fun because it doesn't want to be serious or important. It's all about "a nice guy, a couple of nice cars and a bit of wild adventure".

For Axel Weidemann from FAZ , Magnum PI is a typical '90s series in which “approaches to the conception of television series from four decades” would collide. It includes hybrid humor, the lovable clumsiness of the original and self-referential gags. Although the start of the series is too exaggerated and the plot is sometimes too constructed, Magnum PI is “so outrageous and entertaining in an entertaining way” that it makes you stop watching.

negative

Daniel Fienberg from Hollywood Reporter is more critical of the pilot of the new edition. For him, Magnum PI is less a remake of the original than a further addition to the Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver series , which does not come close to the '80s series. Although he praises the high-quality production design, the decent stunts and the Hawaii scenery together with the car theme as a solid foundation for the series, he also criticizes the sometimes banal voiceover and the unsatisfactory opening scene. Furthermore, the fact that Higgins was rewritten as a woman fulfilled TV clichés for him, although the chemistry between Perdita Weeks and Hernández was right. He doesn't do his job badly at all, but he can't stand out from Selleck's version of the character and can't set his own accents.

Daniel D'Addario from Variety comes to a similar conclusion , even if he sees significantly more potential in the series. Magnum PI starts out clumsily with a “painful maximum exposure” that is achieved through one of many funny, if endless, voiceovers. The viewer does not have time to get to know the individual figures better, and the “inside” of Thomas Magnum is also not illuminated enough. D'Addario judges the actors that Hernández is charming enough for the lead role, while Zachary Knighton's portrayal is far too exaggerated and comic.

Hank Stuever from the Washington Post is completely disappointed . The concept of the unnecessary series relied on nostalgia and knew that its odds would be right. The individual actors all have charm, but are part of an uninspired, uncreative, out of date and action-heavy work. Magnum PI could not trigger any real emotions in the audience, try to introduce too many characters at the same time and the numerous voiceovers would also have no real function.

Mike Hale in the New York Times makes the same assessment . Magnum PI lives from nostalgia and testosterone and is all in all smooth, loud and without personality. In addition to numerous parallels to Hawaii Five-0 and overlaps with the original series, such as the pilot episodes with identical content, another thing in common with the '80s classic is that the core cast lacks a real local figure. Main actor Hernández, however, is "perfectly capable" for his role.

Cornelia Wystrichowski from the Stuttgarter Zeitung describes Magnum PI as “superficial fireworks of action” without charm that bombard the viewer with stunts and shootings. Hernández is "not half as cool" as Selleck.
