Navy CIS: LA (Original Title: NCIS: Los Angeles ) is the first offshoot of the US television series Navy CIS and the third series in the series universe by JAG - On behalf of the honor . It plays in the same series universe as Hawaii Five-0 , as both Kensi Blye and G. Callen and Sam Hanna appear there as agents of NCIS Los Angeles and support the investigation. The series Scorpion also joins the series universe, with Henrietta Lange helping the Scorpion team in an NCIS building with words and deeds.

The extension for an eleventh season was announced on April 22, 2019.

action

Actor is a team from an undercover unit in Los Angeles that is part of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). The main roles are G. Callen and Sam Hanna. Callen, who only knew from his first name for a long time that he started with G, is notorious for his undercover assignments and works at NCIS with the former Navy SEAL Sam Hanna, who - also because of his fluent knowledge of the Arabic language - is an expert in the Middle East East applies. Callen and Hanna get support from the special agents Kensi Blye and Dominic Vail, the technician Eric Beal and the psychologist Nate "Doc" Getz, with Vail joining the team. The unit is headed by Henrietta "Hetty" Lange. In the course of the first season, the character of Dominic Vail leaves the series. Marty Deeks, a LAPD detective, is new .

season 1

After being gunned down in the Navy CIS backdoor pilot, Callen returns to the NCIS team in Los Angeles and resumes his work as an undercover agent. In the first season mainly undercover missions are carried out, which arise due to a murder or suspicion of terrorism. In the thirteenth episode, Agent Vail disappears without a trace. Despite an intensive search, the agents find no trace. It is only in episode 21 ( In the Heart of the City / Found ) that Vail appears again in captivity by terrorists and is shot while trying to free him. Furthermore, Callen is looking for his past and his first name.

season 2

Season two starts where season one ended: in the cemetery. Callen visits his sister's grave and is photographed by someone there. He chases them, but loses them on the roof of a department store. He wakes up because he was only dreaming what happened a short time before. Deeks, who joined the team as a “liaison to the police”, disappeared for some time during an undercover assignment for the LAPD after his partner's car exploded and she was killed. In addition, another character is introduced in the episode The Queen's Jewelry : the news analyst Nell Jones, who from now on works with the technical director Eric Beale. As the season progresses, there are repeated episodes that focus more on a team member's past. At the end of the season, Hetty announced and Lauren Hunter was introduced as the new boss. The team finds out that Hetty is on a mission to Romania to learn more about Callen's past.

season 3

Callen and his team are able to free Hetty from the clutches of the Romanian Comescu family. Back in Los Angeles, she stays at home for the time being and observes the team from a distance. During this time, Lauren Hunter will represent Hetty's position. When Hunter starts an undercover operation in Europe, Hetty resumes her position at headquarters.

During the season, Director Vance appoints an Assistant Director : Owen Granger. From now on, he will monitor the team around Callen and Hetty and set strict standards. He also scrutinizes Kensi, who, in search of the truth about her father's death, first falls into Granger's sights and then into that of a cold-blooded murderer. In the season finale, an old enemy of Callen reappears: the chameleon. He first kills Special Agent Mike Renko and later Lauren Hunter, who suddenly appears again. He is also holding an NSA agent hostage. In exchange, he demands his freedom and fifty million US dollars. When Granger agrees and the handover takes place, Callen coldly shoots his archenemy. He is then arrested and Hetty submits her resignation again.

Season 4

Season 4 picks up where season 3 left off: after the “shooting” of the chameleon. In the course of the first episode it is revealed that everything was just faked and Janvier is extradited to the Iranians. These cut off one hand over the course of the season, as can be seen in the finale. In the Christmas episode The Spinach Trail , Nell and Eric kiss under the mistletoe when Nell tries to persuade Eric to wear an elf costume. Sam's wife Michelle aka "Quinn" is featured in a double episode. You and Sam investigate Isaak Sidirov in several episodes and look for stolen nuclear bombs. Kensi and Deeks also get closer as the season progresses. Deeks notes that Kensi smells like "sunshine and gunpowder" and that these are two of his favorite things. In the season finale, the two finally kiss just before Deeks and Sam are captured and tortured. Michelle is attacked by two Russian women and Callen finds out that the chameleon betrayed Sam.

Season 5

At the beginning of season 5, Kensi has to free Michelle from the clutches of the Russians. Kensi and Granger learn the whereabouts of Deeks and Sam and can finally free them with the help of Sam's wife. The NEST team secures the bombs and the chameleon ends up in prison.

In the second episode, Nate talks to Sam and Deeks about their trauma and they both get back to work. Deeks, who has insomnia which the presence of Kensi fixes one evening, also comes back. Deeks 'traumatic experiences and the kiss bring the two closer together, until it finally leads to a date and then to a night at Deeks' home. However, only one day later, Kensi was ordered to Afghanistan to eliminate a target that turned out to be a fake, as the CIA was only looking for the "White Ghost" in order to cover up its own secrets. Hetty sends Kensi to turn off the "White Ghost" because she knows that the man this code stands for is Kensi's ex-fiancé Jack Simon, who is actually not involved in any criminal activities. Hetty is sure that Kensi would never pull the trigger. After Kensi was captured while searching for Jack, the team travels to Afghanistan to rescue her. While Callen and Sam encounter terrorists in search of Kensi, Deeks tries to gather information in the village. After seeing a picture of the (apparently) killed Kensi, he tries to find out their location by waterboarding the father of a terrorist. However, he breaks off almost immediately and apologizes to the man. Later he can save Kensi and Jack by exchanging prisoners.

He has an eventful past (was born in Romania, but is now a US citizen) and previously worked for the CIA , the FBI and the DEA, among others . In his childhood he was in 37 foster families. Callen once served with his good friend Leroy Jethro Gibbs . It is known that he has already been on various undercover missions around the world and has therefore lived under many identities. Callen is always looking for his past, his family and his first name. In the season one finale, it is learned that he had an older sister named Amy, who, however, died at a young age. In Season 7, Episode 16, Callen learns that his name is Grisha Alexandrovich Nikolaev. His mother, who was in the service of the CIA, was killed in a family feud with a criminal Romanian family. Agent Callen speaks Russian, Polish, Czech, Romanian, German (although according to his own statement with an Austrian accent), Italian, Spanish, French and Arabic. He is stationed in the NCIS Office for Special Projects in Los Angeles (OPS = Office for Special Projects).

She also maintains diverse contacts in global politics, which she often uses to help advance the cases of her team. She is also a passionate tea drinker and always tries to get the rest of the team on board. She is very fond of dressing her colleagues. It is never entirely known where and in what positions in the world she has worked; However, it is possible to draw conclusions about their previous activities through various situations. In some episodes she opens her desk, where various ID cards and driver's licenses with different names can be seen neatly sorted. Furthermore, Hetty meets with one of her contacts and is referred to by this person as the "Princess of Deception". She has at least a command of German and Russian.

Eric Beale

He is the department's computer expert and technology freak and the most important link between his colleagues on the job and headquarters. He is also proficient in sign language. Surfing is one of his hobbies. He only comes into the office in shorts and flip-flops. When the team is on the field, he is very rarely there. He is the NCIS / LAPD liaison officer. He runs into Sam Hanna during a joint undercover investigation. Hetty, who has been watching him for a long time, uses her contacts to get him transferred to the NCIS. She tells Callen that Deeks should join the team as the new agent. In the first episode of the second season, his LAPD partner Jess Traynor is murdered. In episode 17 of the second season, Deeks is gunned down in a convenience shop before work starts , but survives. In the same episode it is learned that he shot his father in self-defense when he was eleven years old. In episode 23 of the second season, Hetty offers him a job at NCIS, which he refuses because he is a police officer and that is more to him than just a job. It is known that he has a command of the Spanish language. He falls in love with Kensi during the fourth season and confesses his feelings to her with a kiss. In the fifth season, they both spend one night together. In the eleventh episode of the sixth season, the two finally come together after a kiss on an ice rink. In the course of the seventh season, both even move in together. In the tenth season, Deeks and Kensi get married.

Penelope "Nell" Jones

She is a news analyst and Eric's partner in the NCIS office. She carries a weapon during field operations (see 2.06 and 3.17), even though she is not an agent. She is also highly intelligent, but does not reveal the exact number of her IQ. She has been friends with Nate Getz for several years, but the exact relationship between the two has not yet been clarified. He's also the first to notice that Nell has feelings for Eric that go beyond friendship.

She also likes flowers and football and has been signed up on an online dating platform by her little sister. In the course of the fifth season she is at the side of Deeks more often in the field and gets into trouble again and again, which Eric is very displeasing. Her full name, Penelope, is revealed in season eight. She also has a big sister named Sydney.

Nate "Doc" Getz

He was the unit's psychologist, profiling the suspects and providing psychological advice to the team members. He knows how to play the banjo and harmonica. He also likes to listen to jazz. He often worked a lot of overtime, which is why Hetty asked him about it. In the third episode of the second season he goes to Kabul voluntarily to help the people there. In episode 2.14 it is revealed that he tried to track down the terror cell "Warriors for Islam" there. In the course of the episode, he works with the team again, as a lead led him to Oakville Prison (USA). It is also revealed that he has known Nell Jones for a long time, although he left the team before her time. In episode 2.18 it is revealed that he is stationed in Yemen to keep an eye on the leader of the “Warriors for Islam”.

Former characters

Owen Granger

Granger is the on-site Assistant Director overseeing the Hetty team. He disciplines missions and gives instructions that the team is reluctant to carry out. Furthermore, he often suggests that the "Henrietta Lange Period" will soon be over. However, he also shows his sympathy for Hetty Lange and her team on some missions and occasionally takes part in field missions himself. In episode 16 of the eighth season, Owen Granger secretly disappears from the hospital and leaves Hetty a suicide note suggesting his death.

Lara Macy

Senior Special Agent. She was the head of the team in the backdoor pilot, but was replaced by Hetty Lange for the series. She was a retired Marine Corps Military Police Officer investigating the murder of a Mexican drug dealer who killed Gibbs' family. Leroy Jethro Gibbs was suspected at the time. In episode 23 of season seven of Navy CIS , her body is found cremated.

Dominic Vail

Vail joined the team as an NCIS Junior Special Agent and disappeared in episode 13 of the first season. He was captured by several unknown kidnappers. An Islamist terrorist cell later confesses to his kidnapping and demands the release of a captured terrorist. While fleeing from his kidnappers, he was shot dead on the roof of a former cinema in LA. He dies in the arms of his colleagues Callen and Sam.

Lauren Hunter

Special Agent Hunter was the head of the OSP during Hetty's absence. She will be used by Hetty at the end of season 2 and will represent them until Hetty returns in season 3. She later dies when the chameleon detonates a car bomb.

It is also known that her past is similar to that of Callen, as both were orphans and both were "recruited" by Hetty.

production

During the filming of the Backdoor Pilot 2009

Filming began in February 2009. The characters were featured and introduced in the NCIS double episode Legend . These episodes were a so-called backdoor pilot for the series, comparable to the main series NCIS, which had its backdoor pilot in the series JAG - On behalf of the honor with two episodes. While the series was extended by a second season in January 2010, CBS commissioned the production of a third season in May 2011. A fourth season was also announced in March 2012. On March 27, 2013, CBS extended the series for a fifth season.

In March 2013, another NCIS team was presented in a double episode, episodes 18 and 19 of the fourth season, which should serve for a new spin-off. However, this was later rejected.

Style and episode structure

In general, there is a great similarity to the parent format. This is mainly seen through the use of a style element, which leads to the separation of a sequence into individual chapters. At Navy CIS , this is represented by a black and white image, which is usually frozen and accompanied by a dull noise, at the end of a chapter, while a few seconds later another image of the next chapter appears, with which the same happens.

In the Navy CIS: LA offshoot , chapters are also shown in black and white. Here, however, there are several images that are quickly superimposed and look like they were taken by a single-lens reflex camera. The sound of the mirror when it folds back completes the audio-visual separation.

Radiance and reach

United States

On April 28 and May 5, 2009, the team was presented on the US broadcaster CBS in a double episode of Navy CIS . Since September 22, 2009, NCIS: Los Angeles has aired on the slot behind Navy CIS . The first episode of the series reached 18 million viewers in the United States. The second season started on September 21, 2010 with a double episode and ended on May 17, 2011. The third season has been broadcast since September 20, 2011.

In March 2012, CBS extended the series by a fourth season, which aired from September 25, 2012 through May 14, 2013. The fifth season began to be broadcast on September 24, 2013 and ended on May 13, 2014. The sixth season was broadcast from September 29, 2014 to May 18, 2015.

The seventh season of the series premiered on CBS on September 21, 2015. Due to the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris , the November 16 episode Defectors , whose plot includes ISIS terrorists, was suspended and replaced by The Long Goodbye , originally scheduled for December .

Germany

The series has been running on German free TV since July 24, 2010 on the private broadcaster Sat.1 . But for the first time the protagonists of the spin-off were seen in Germany on October 25, 2009 and November 1, 2009 in the series Navy CIS , in the cross-series episode Legende (parts 1 and 2).

Sat.1 broadcast the regular first season as well as the first five episodes of the second season in a row from July 24, 2010 to February 5, 2011 (with a short break between the seasons) on Saturdays, with the first four episodes being broadcast in double episodes . Sat.1 ended the second season with the fifth episode due to poor ratings.

On August 11, 2011, Sat.1 changed the broadcast slot and continued the broadcast of the second season on Thursday as part of the “Super Series Thursday”. At the start and after a one-week break in November, the episodes were broadcast in double episodes. The first thirteen episodes of the third season also aired on Thursday, but at a later time.

Since the broadcast of the remaining episodes of the third season from July 8, 2012, the series has always been broadcast on Sundays as part of the “Super Series Sunday” in the mother format Navy CIS . The exception was the first broadcast of the first thirteen episodes of the fifth season. These were broadcast an hour later. On August 26, 2012, the two series Hawaii Five-0 and Navy CIS: LA swapped the transmission slot once, as the series crossover The Game with Death had the first part in Hawaii Five-0 and the second part in Navy CIS: LA aired in a row.

Since 2011, the first broadcast of a season begins either in January or February (exceptions in 2013 and 2016: in April). After a summer break, the season usually ends in September or November for the first time. In addition, older episodes have been repeated on kabel eins since 2013 . Sat.1 has been broadcasting its seventh season since April 3, 2016.

The series has been running on German pay TV since 2011 on 13th Street .

Austria

In Austria, the broadcaster ORF has broadcast one Navy CIS: LA since July 25, 2010.

The second season was seen since January 9, 2011, episodes 6 to 10 in German-language first broadcast. This ended after a long break on September 22, 2013. From September 7, 2014 to February 5, 2015, the third season was broadcast. The fourth season aired from February 26, 2015.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, the series has been broadcast on the 3+ channel since August 16, 2010 . The series also ran on HD suisse from 2010 to 2012 . The series is marketed there under the name NCIS - Los Angeles .

background

  • Louise Lombard , who played department manager and special agent Lara Macy in the backdoor pilot, was not cast on the series.
  • Shane Brennan, the producer of Navy CIS and Navy CIS: LA , announced that there will be crossover episodes. As an example, he cited a storyline with Abigail Sciuto that begins in Los Angeles and ends in Washington, DC, home of NCIS .
  • Sat.1 chose the name Navy CIS: LA as in the main series Navy CIS, a wrong title that deviates from the original, the "N" in "NCIS" in the original stands for "Naval" and not for "Navy".

criticism

  • Nina Rehfeld wrote in the FAZ : “The contrast between the inexperienced serious destroyer (DiNozzo) and his laconic boss (Gibbs) is missing, as is the casual sarcasm that defines the entertainment value of 'Navy CIS'. 'NCIS: LA' is solid crime entertainment, but above all it shows what the audience has about the original. "
  • For Hollywoodreporter.com, Barry Garron wrote: "'NCIS: LA', like its parent, relies on a sturdy, mostly youthful cast, sporadic action, and sprightly dialogue. It courts younger-adult male viewers […]. Chances are, it will enjoy some serious audience flow. So, a similar dearth of Emmy noms. "(German:" 'NCIS: LA', like the parent format, builds on robust, mostly young actors, isolated action and lively dialogues. The series vies for young, male viewers [...]. It seems likely that the series will benefit greatly from audience flow [through NCIS]. A similar lack of Emmy nominations is to be expected. ") Garron also wrote," [...] 'NCIS: LA' is little more than an updated version of 'The A-Team' of the 1980s, with more high-tech gadgetry and fewer explosions. ”(German:“ […] 'NCIS: LA' is little more than a renewed version of 'Das A-Team' der 80s, with more high-tech toys and fewer explosions. ")
