Vertebrate tracking site in Borgholzhausen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Borgholzhausen vertebrate tracking site is located between the northern area of the Ravensberger Stadium and the Wichlinghauser Weg in Borgholzhausen , Gütersloh district , in the Teutoburg Forest .

history

The tracks were discovered in 1996 during construction work. The rocks are about 240 million years old limestone and marl stones of the shell limestone from the Triassic period . They contain at least 30 horizons with step seals and track prints of tetrapods , which were assigned to the trace fossil genera Rhynchosauroides peabodyi and Procolophonichnium haarmuehlensis . When the LWL Museum für Naturkunde was excavated in 1997, a fragmented, 2.8 by 1.7 meter slab of stone with step seals was stabilized and recovered using silicone rubber. This was exhibited in 2000 at the national archaeological exhibition.
