action

The writer Dorothy Parker was one of the stars of New York City's intellectual circles in the 1920s. As the doyenne of the legendary "Algonquin Round Table", a circle of literary greats, her spirit and her bonmots are as popular as they are feared. But while Dorothy Parker shines effortlessly on a spiritual level, she cannot get a grip on her life, which is characterized by alcoholism, suicide attempts and constant lovesickness.

Reviews

English language reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was "top-notch" and that everything was in the right place. Jennifer Jason Leigh gave the best representation of her career to date; for less you have already won an Oscar . Alan Rudolph has successfully created a film that is as laughable as it is to cry. One can only question the historical accuracy of the presentation of events based on the statements of Parker, who is known for exaggeration.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of December 23, 1994 that the film was one of those films that would most likely be appreciated by those viewers who would already know the characters portrayed. The other viewers would be surprised what the film is about. The portrayal of Jennifer Jason Leigh allows one to empathize with Dorothy Parker.

Rotten Tomatoes wrote that Jennifer Jason Leigh provided a "breathtaking" portrayal in Dorothy Parker's "conjuring portrait". She is supported by "outstanding" supporting actors. The result is "relentlessly honest". The “lush” images would convey the “decadence of the period”. Mark Isham's “great” music was also praised.

German-language reviews

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was "intoxicating head-and-stomach cinema". The “elegant images and leaps in time” would “make you drunk”. The black and white filmed flashbacks are "a fantastic directorial stroke" by Alan Rudolph.

The magazine prisma certified the film as having "a lot of puns" and "suggestive dialogues". The director indulged "too much in the costumes and décor of the era described" and delivered "long stretches of neat boredom despite having a brilliant leading actress".

Awards

The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or in 1994. Jennifer Jason Leigh was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Drama in 1995 .
