Jennifer Beals
Jennifer Beals (born December 19, 1963 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actress .
life and work
Beals is the daughter of an African-American supermarket owner and a teacher of Irish-American descent; her father died when she was nine years old. She grew up in Chicago and studied at the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University through high school .
1983 Beals received at the Yale University in Connecticut a place for American and American Literature ; one of her fellow students was David Duchovny . In the same year she received the lead role of Alex Owens in the film Flashdance as one of over 4,000 applicants , for which she won the Image Award in 1984 and was also nominated for a Golden Globe . This brought her to international fame, which did not prevent her from completing her studies at Yale in 1987 with honors. During the semester break and after her studies, she played in many smaller productions such as Wishful Thinking .
Beals had great success with the series The L Word - When Women Love Women , which was broadcast from 2004 to 2009 , in which she played the African-American curator of a museum in Los Angeles in the lead role of Bette Porter . Since 2019 she is in the sequel to The L Word: Generation Q to see. In 2005 Beals was nominated for the Satellite Award for this role and in 2007 for a NAACP Image Award in the category Best Actress in a TV Drama . In 2005 she made the horror film The Curse - The Grudge 2 , 2006 the thriller Troubled Waters . This was followed by other film and television roles. Since 2017 she has been in Taken - The time is your enemy to see. Her work includes around 80 productions.
Private life
Beals was married to the director and writer Alexandre Rockwell from 1986 to 1996 , the marriage remained childless. In 1998 she married the Canadian film technician Ken Dixon . The couple have a daughter (* 2005) and two children from Dixon's first marriage.
Beals has been friends with Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin for over thirty years , which is why she learned sign language . She has another friendship with the director and film producer Quentin Tarantino , with whom she starred in the 1995 film Four Rooms .
