Alexandre Rockwell (* 1956 in Boston , Massachusetts ; actually Sam Rockwell ) is an American film director .

Life

As a teenager, Rockwell made his first short films in a suburb of Boston in 1974 . He later went to Paris to work and studied graphics and literature as well as his film craft at the Cinématique Française . His short films were shown at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Boston as early as 1979 . In 1981 he shot his first feature film with Lenz .

This film was based on the novel of the same name ( Lenz ) by Georg Büchner . Rockwell transferred the action, set in the 18th century, to contemporary New York . The movie hero - played by Rockwell himself - loses touch with New York reality and ends up in madness. Rockwell found his cast on the streets of New York, considering New York itself as a prehistoric background for his film. He understands prehistoric in the sense of time and unconsciousness. The film was shown at the 12th International Forum for Young Films in Berlin during the Berlinale .

Rockwell also won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival for his film In the Soup . He had already received a special award for Hero (1983) when the film festival was first held in 1984 . This film established its reputation as an acting director, even if the film's plot was received very differently by critics. Hero is about three half-brothers and their ailing father, while In the Soup is more autobiographical and was shot in black and white.

Tony Curtis , Jim Jarmusch , Samuel Fuller , Antonio Banderas , Anthony Quinn and Madonna played in his films . Alexandre Rockwell was married to actress Jennifer Beals from 1986 to 1996 . In 2002, while filming 13 Moons , he met actress Karyn Parsons , best known for her role in The Prince of Bel Air . The couple married in 2003 and have two children together. Rockwell has been the director of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts Grad Film directing department since 2017.
