Carolyn Tyler is a cardiovascular surgeon who often brings people back to life on the brink of death. After her teenage son's death, a divorce, and a breakup with her daughter, she is confronted with Ivan Turing, an inventor and billionaire with cancer, who offers her his $ 10 billion net worth in exchange for clues as to what happens after death. He then reminds her of her traumatic experiences: a boat disaster in Japan , which she survived, and the recent death of her son. Carolyn meets Lilly, a young girl in the clinic who has been in a coma for five days. Lilly says she spent those days in “another place” and draws pictures of people she has never seen before, including her grandfather. Later, after an operation in which Lilly had a blood clot removed from her brain, she told Carolyn that "she", the people on the "other side" told her not to talk about this other place or their experiences . Carolyn then agrees to Ivan's research.
