Body and Mind (Original title: Body and Soul ) is an American drama film directed by Sam Henry Kass from 1998 .

The Boxsportler Charlie Davis lives in a small town in Pennsylvania . He and his friend Tiny O'Toole as managers go to Reno , where they promise better career opportunities. On the way, they meet the hitchhiker Gina, whom Davis falls in love with.
Davis becomes successful, especially after meeting the powerful sports promoter Alex Dumas, who controls the fights that take place in Reno. Gina finds work in town. Davis' friendships dissolve; he meets Felice Gillian, who used to be with Dumas. Davis wins the world championship.
The new world champion starts an affair with Gillian while Dumas picks out easy opponents for him. He soon learns that Gillian has other lovers. He trains less and wants to end the business relationship with Dumas after the next fight. Dumas agrees.
Davis realizes that Dumas is betting on his next opponent, a Mexican. He is training intensively again. During the fight he is first defeated, then he wins the fight by knockout . Dumas wants a renewal of the collaboration, but Davis refuses and leaves the room with Gina who is present.

Reviews
Mike DeWolfe wrote in the Apollo Movie Guide that a successful athlete not only needs the will to win, but an urge that consumes him. The film does not so much show the auto-destructive aspects, but rather the background of boxing, which is entertainment at the same time and - as is so often the case in the world of entertainment - a lot depends on agreements and backers. The athlete Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini draws from his personal experience and offers a “convincing” presentation. The representations of Jennifer Beals and Tahnee Welch are "wooden" while Joe Mantegna is "garish" and at the same time "slimy" and Rod Steiger plays "fiery". Overall, the presentations are "uneven", but the film is "surprisingly worth seeing".
