from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Louis John Eppolito (born July 22, 1948 in Brooklyn , New York City - † November 3, 2019 in Tucson , Arizona ) was an American policeman with the New York Police Department (NYPD). He was active as a casual actor through an acquaintance with actor Joe Pesci in several films. In 2006, he and his colleague Stephen Caracappa were sentenced to life imprisonment for laboratory racketeering , extortion , drug trafficking , illegal gambling and eightfold murder on behalf of the US Mafia .

Life

Louis Eppolito is the son of Ralph Eppolito, a member of the Gambino family . His brother James Eppolito and his son James Eppolito Jr. were also full members of the Mafia. They belonged to the crew around the Caporegime Anthony "Nino" Gaggi (Gambino family) and were later murdered by Roy DeMeo . When he applied to the New York Police Department in 1969, Eppolito made false statements about his relationship to Mafia members.

He took it to the detective and was suspected of forwarding reports to Rosario Gambino , a distant relative of Carlo Gambino , and Paul Castellano in 1983. However, he was acquitted of this suspicion. He retired in the late 1990s and wrote the book Mafia Cop: The Story of an Honest Cop Whose Family Was the Mob , in which he portrays himself as a decent cop who resisted the temptation to collaborate with the Mafia.

Work for the mob

In 1985, authorities became aware that Eppolito and Caracappa were working for the New York Mafia.

Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso , the underboss of the Lucchese family, testified in 1994 as Pentito against his former family. In 1994 he admitted that he and his boss Vittorio "Vic" had paid Amuso Eppolito and Caracappa $ 375,000 for contract killings since 1985. In 1986, they kidnapped James Hydell and brutally murdered them on behalf of Casso and Amuso. They also murdered the informant Bruno Facciolo and stuffed a canary in his mouth as a warning to other "songbirds".

When the boss of the Genovese family Vincent “Chin” Gigante John Gotti wanted to be murdered, Eppolito and Caracappa were also hired by Casso. Both first murdered Gambino Capo Edward "Eddie" Lino on behalf of Gigante.

Caracappa and Eppolito retired in Las Vegas in the mid-1990s . In 1993, Frank Lastorino is said to have approached them with the request to murder the Gambino boss John "Junior" Gotti and Nicholas "Little Nick" Corozzo . However, this was never put into practice.

Condemnation

In 2005, Eppolito and Caracappa were arrested and charged with the murders of James Hydell, Nicholas Guido, John “Otto” Heidel, John Doe, Anthony DiLapi , Bruno Facciolo, Edward Lino and Bartholomew Boriello , and sentenced to life imprisonment on June 5.

On March 6, 2009, Eppolitos was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 100 years and Caracappa was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 80 years. They were both fined $ 4 million.

These judgments were confirmed again in 2012 before an appeals court. Since April 2012, Eppolito has been held in the United States Penitentiary, Tucson maximum security prison in Tucson , Arizona .

He died on November 3, 2019 in a Tucson hospital at the age of 71.
