The WU-FTPD is an FTP daemon developed at Washington University , a server for the File Transfer Protocol . The license of the WU-FTPD conforms to the Debian Free Software Guidelines . The WU-FTPD was originally programmed by Chris Myers and Bryan O'Connor for the large archives of the university and is characterized by a wide range of functions.
In the spring of 1999, the WU-FTPD Development Group was founded for further development and published the latest version 2.6.2 on November 30, 2001.
In the early 2000s, the WU-FTPD was widespread and one of the routes of infection for the ramen worm . The problem, discovered in 2004, that highlighted the security concept of the WU-FTPD was that users found themselves in the root directory of the operating system as soon as they supposedly lost all rights. In the mid-2000s, the maintainers no longer responded to urgent vulnerability reports. The website of the WU-FTPD Development Group has not been accessible since 2008 .
For example, the latest stable versions of Debian no longer provide wu-ftpd .
