The Washington University in St. Louis is a private American University in St. Louis , Missouri . It is a member of the Association of American Universities , an association of leading research-intensive North American universities that has existed since 1900. The university has 14 libraries with a total of 3.6 million holdings as well as numerous scientific institutes and centers.

history

Washington University was the site of the 1904 Summer Olympics .

It was founded in 1853 by the Unitarian William Greenleaf Eliot , the grandfather of the writer TS Eliot , and Wayman Crow . At first it was named "Eliot Seminary" in honor of Eliot, although this was less comfortable, so that in 1854 it was named "Washington Institute in St. Louis". In 1857 the name was shortened to a simple "Washington University". However, since it was often confused with the 17 other institutions of the same name, the university was given its current name in 1976. Usually they are briefly referred to as “Wash. U. ”or“ WUSTL ”.

The sports teams are the bears . The university is a member of the University Athletic Association .

Ranking

In all of the rankings considered in recent years, all major subject areas are among the top 20 universities in the USA. Over 90% instead of less than half of the nationwide colored students successfully complete their studies, which in the USA is generally regarded as an indication of high teaching quality, as it is a very typical feature of the most established universities.
