JD Parran

JD Parran is an American jazz musician , teacher and composer. Settled in avant-garde jazz and in the field of new improvisation music, he plays a variety of instruments, soprano , alto , tenor , baritone and bass saxophone , as well as various clarinets such as the alto clarinet, bass clarinet and the contralto-alto clarinet, and various flutes as well as the Nagaswaram .

Parran attended college in St. Louis, Missouri , then studied at Webster University there and received an MA in music education from Washington University in St. Louis in 1971 . During his time as a student, he worked there with musicians from the Black Artists Group . From 1971 he lived in New York City , where he initially studied at the New School for Social Research . To date (2008) he is a member of the faculty of the Harlem School of the Arts and headed their course for jazz and African American music . He also taught at the City University of New York .

He began his career as a musician in 1973 in the Human Arts Ensemble around Luther Thomas and in the St. Louis group Third Spirit in Circuit . In the late 1970s he also played in the quintet of Leroy Jenkins ( Mixed Quintet , Black Saint ) and in the Creative Music Orchestra of Anthony Braxton , with whom he performed at the 1978 Moers Festival . In 1979 he was in Germany as a member of the George Lewis quartet . In 1983 he worked with Derek Bailey and his improvisation group Company , which at the time also included Peter Brötzmann , John Corbett , Hugh Davies , Jamie Muir , Evan Parker , Vinko Globokar , Ernst Reijseger and Joëlle Léandre . In 1984 he played with Hamiet Bluiett on his album Clarinet Family and also worked on John Lindberg 's Trilogy of Works for Eleven Instrumentalists . In 1986 he performed in Moers with the Clarinet Choir , which also included Edward Wilkerson and Mwata Bowden . In 1988 he played in Julius Hemphills Big Band ; in the 1990s he worked with Don Byron ( Plays the Music of Mickey Katz and You Are # 6 ), Anthony Braxton ( Four (Ensemble) Compositions ) and Annea Lockwood ( Thousand Year Dreaming ).

Since 1992 he played with Robert Dick , Ned Rothenberg and Gerry Hemingway in the formation New Winds . He was also with James Jabbo Ware & the Me, We And Them Orchestra in Europe. In 1997 he worked on Ken Peplowski's grenadilla clarinet project, in 1999 he worked with Alan Silva and his Sound Visions Orchestra . For a long time he was a member of Anthony Davis ' Episteme Ensemble . In 2007 he was involved in Bill Dixon's 17 Musicians in Search of a Sound: Darfur .

Parran has also recorded with artists such as Stevie Wonder and John Lennon throughout his career . In 2008 he worked with singer Rosemary George and in the Ensemble Hellacious , but also with guitarist Angelo Branford.

As a sideman he has recorded 45 albums. JD Parran released an album under his own name, JD Parran & Spirit Stage (2002). Together with Jason Robinson , Marty Ehrlich , Marcus Rojas , Bill Lowe , Liberty Ellman , Drew Gress , George Schuller , Ches Smith , Tiresian Symmetry ( Cuneiform Records ) was released in 2012 .
