John Arthur III Lindberg (born March 16, 1959 in Royal Oak , Michigan) is an American jazz bassist and composer.

Live and act

Lindberg learned the double bass from David Izenzon and Dave Holland . He moved to New York City at the age of 18 and initially played with Charles Bobo Shaw . In the mid-1970s he founded the String Trio of New York with violinist Billy Bang and guitarist James Emery , with whom he has recorded several albums (including with Jay Clayton and Oliver Lake ); Charles Burnham and Regina Carter later played instead of Bang . From 1979 to 1985 Lindberg was part of Anthony Braxton's quartet ; he also recorded in a duo with Braxton and with Keshavan Maslak . He played in the John Lindberg Ensemble with Wadada Leo Smith , Andrew Cyrille and Larry Ochs and in the John Lindberg Quartet , where he works with Steve Gorn , Susie Ibarra and Baikida Carroll (whose album "Winter Birds" was released in 2004). He also plays in a duo with Karl Berger . In 2011 he appeared on Wadada Leo Smith's Ten Freedom Summers .

For the last 30 years Lindberg lived partly in Europe, where he played with Eric Watson in particular ; their duo was partially expanded to include Albert Mangelsdorff and Ed Thigpen . He continued to work with Jimmy Lyons , Steve Lacy , Tony Coe , George Lewis , Martin Mayes , Theo Jörgensmann , Barry Altschul , Frank Gratkowski , Luther Thomas and Wolfgang Schmidtke . Lindberg has worked on almost 100 records since 1977, including more than 30 under his own name.
