Charles "Bobo" Shaw (* 5. September 1947 in Pope County , Minnesota ; † 16th January 2017 ) was an American jazz - drummer and bandleader .

Live and act

Shaw studied drums with Ben Thigpen and occasionally played the trombone and bass. He was one of the founders of the Black Artists Group in St. Louis in the early 1960s . In addition, he worked a. a. with Lester Bowie , Frank Lowe , Hamiet Bluiett and Oliver Lake . Later in the 1960s, Shaw played free jazz in Paris with Anthony Braxton , Steve Lacy , Frank Wright , Alan Silva and Michel Portal .

In 1971 he recorded with Oliver Lake in St. Louis. In the early 1970s he founded the Human Arts Ensemble , which made recordings with Lake, Lester and Joseph Bowie , Julius Hemphill and others. In 1976 he participated in the Wildflowers sessions; In the late 1970s he toured Europe with the Human Arts Ensemble . He worked with Billy Bang in the 1980s .

Charles Shaw died in a hospice in St. Louis, Missouri on January 16, 2017.
