Frank Lowe

Frank Lowe (* 24. June 1943 in Memphis , Tennessee ; † 19th September 2003 in New York City ) was an American jazz - saxophonist .

Live and act

Lowe began his saxophone training at the age of eleven and was a student of Packy Axton . After attending the University of Kansas , he went to Los Angeles , where he was sponsored by Donald Rafael Garrett and Sonny Simmons , who encouraged him to work in New York.

There he was a member of the Sun Ra orchestra for two years . In 1972 Alice Coltrane brought him to record her album World Galaxy . The following year he recorded the album Duo Exchange with Rashied Ali for his label Survival Records . In the same year his first album appeared as the band leader Black Beings . In the 1970s, more albums appeared; he also shot and produced the film Street Music . Since the late 1970s, he has increasingly worked with the violinist Billy Bang .

From 1984 he withdrew largely due to health problems; only in 1991 did the new album Inappropriate Choices with James Carter appear . In the following years he was promoted by Bob Rusch , but was able to appear and take up less and less because of his lung cancer. In 2003 his last album Lowe-Down and Blue was released .
