Jack Arthur Walrath Jr

Jack Arthur Walrath Junior (born May 5, 1946 in Stuart (Florida) ) is an American jazz trumpeter and arranger.

Live and act

Walrath started playing the trumpet at the age of nine. Between 1964 and 1968 he studied at Berklee College . During this time he occasionally played with Rahsaan Roland Kirk , Clark Terry , Sam Rivers , Freddie Hubbard and Miroslav Vitouš . In 1968 he went on tour with the fusion band Change . He also played in the Motown Orchestra and Latin bands. Between 1969 and 1971 he led the group Revival with Glenn Ferris ; then he played with Ray Charles and founded his own quintet. In 1973 he played with Paul Jeffrey , and then worked in Charles Mingus' band until 1978 , for whom he also arranged for the album Something Like a Bird . He then led his own band again, in which John Scofield and Jim McNeely played. In the 1980s he worked again with Glenn Ferris, but also with Dannie Richmond and with the Mingus Dynasty , which he led from 1989. He also founded his Masters of Suspense (for his album of the same name from 1987 he was nominated for a Grammy ).

Walrath was also involved in several records by the Mingus Big Band (since 1993) and on Gunther Schuller's recording of Epitaph , and has appeared with Sam Rivers, Joe Morello , Charlie Persip , Mal Waldron , Carlos Ward , Kenny Garrett and Ricky Ford . He later played with the Concert Band of George Gruntz , but also with the New York Jazz Composers Orchestra , Bobby Watson , Benny Green , Larry Coryell and the WDR Big Band . He has also worked for Lou Rawls , Muhal Richard Abrams , Pee Wee Ellis , Gerry Mulligan , John Hicks , Hamiet Bluiett , Cecil Brooks III , Ray Anderson and with the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra . He played with Miles Davis and the Quincy Jones Orchestra at the Montreux Jazz Festival .
