Stuart is a city and also the county seat of Martin County in the US state of Florida with 15,593 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Stuart is located on the St. Lucie River , just before its confluence with the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic . The city is about 5 km southeast of Port St. Lucie and 160 km north of Miami .

history

From 1893 to 1895 the location was named Potsdam. This name came from Otto Stypmann, a landowner at the time in the area of ​​what is now Stuart, who came from Potsdam in Brandenburg. Potsdam was renamed Stuart in 1895 after the completion of the Florida East Coast Railway in honor of another local landowner named Homer Hine Stuart, Jr. In 1914, Stuart was declared a city.

The old town center, also known as the Confusion corner , is worth seeing . With its attractive pubs and ale houses, it attracts the small number of young people. Stuart is very popular as a retirement home.

In 2000, English was the first language of 91.30% of the population, 6.09% spoke Spanish and 2.61% had another mother tongue.

The city is crossed and tangent to by US Highway 1 ( SR 5 ) and Florida State Roads A1A , 76 and 714 . Nearby leading Interstate 95 past the city. Stuart is passed by the Florida East Coast Railway and has an airfield called Witham Field , named after an American fighter pilot in World War II. The nearest international airport is Palm Beach International Airport (60 km south). The mighty Roosevelt Bridge leads north over the St. Lucie River.

The crime rate in 2010 was 243 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were four rapes, ten robberies, 38 assaults, 108 break-ins, 560 thefts, 19 car thefts and one arson.
