Indiantown is a census-designated place (CDP) in Martin County in the US state of Florida with 6083 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Indiantown is about 35 km southwest of Stuart and about 140 km north of Miami . Florida State Roads 76 and 710 and the Okeechobee Waterway cross and touch the CDP .

history

In April 1924 the subsidiary Florida, Western and Northern Railroad of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL) was founded, which was to build a railway line from Coleman via Sebring and Indiantown to West Palm Beach . The entire corridor was opened in January 1925. Indiantown was a SAL passenger train station until 1971. Amtrak then took over operations on the route and left the station on.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 6,083 inhabitants were distributed over 1,751 households. The population density was 392.5 inh / km². 48.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 14.6% as African American , 3.4% as Indians and 0.2% as Asian Americans . 30.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 64.6% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 44.2% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 38.5% of all households. 76.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 3.79 people and the average family size was 3.91 people.

32.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 29.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 19.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 18.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 31 years. 55.3% of the population were male and 44.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 38,975, with 26.8% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 52.17% of the population, 37.25% spoke Spanish and 10.58% spoke Mayan languages .

Attractions

On May 31, 2006, the Seminole Inn was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
